NPE 2024 - The Plastics Show

Innovations make for a better tomorrow. The NPE 2024 serves as an arena where the best ideas in the plastics and rubber industry convene. Please stop by the WACKER booth located at #S32079 in the South Hall, Level 1 Expo Hall in the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL.

Sustainable Freshness with Solid Silicone Rubber

Interested visitors coming to the NPE will have the opportunity to drop by our booth and see for themselves how automated injection molding works for heat-curing, mass-balanced silicone rubber. As part of a live demonstration, we’ll be manufacturing a lemon juicer of a food-grade silicone product (SILMIX® eco R plus TS 40002) made from plant-based methanol, i.e., methanol that has not been derived from fossil resources.

SILMIX® eco R plus TS 40002 is an industrial-grade silicone rubber compound whose precursors are derived from plant-based raw materials.

The use of biomethanol in silicone production helps preserve fossil resources. The chemical industry is committed to continuously reducing its use of fossil raw materials. One strategy is to replace these raw fossil materials with identical materials from renewable resources – an option best implemented using the mass balance approach. This method allows manufacturers to process raw materials from fossil-based and renewable sources at the same time, later assigning them to specific products according to the proportions in which they were used. In this way, the mass balance approach ensures that the “bio-based” label is applied only to those products that can be verified as being based on renewable raw materials.

Themes and Highlights at NPE 2024

Protecting the climate is more than just the greatest challenge of our time. At WACKER, we are prepared to do our part to make the climate and energy transition a success with a wide variety of initiatives and investments.

Sustainable Products

We evaluate and optimize our portfolio with an eye on products that promote sustainability. It is WACKER’s aim to make products as sustainable as possible from the outset. By adopting effective measures, we are seizing the opportunity to make a positive influence on various impacts of sustainability right from the start.

Elastosil eco Visual

ELASTOSIL® eco Portfolio

Our range of eco-grade silicones include silicone fluids, defoaming agents, fabric softeners, silicone release agents, and silicone sealants. Biomethanol-based versions of several silicone rubber compounds will be available beginning in the fall. ELASTOSIL® eco LR 5040 is extremely tear-resistant, non-post curing grade and will be available for order in six different hardness values. Customers will also have a choice between two lines of solid silicone rubber: Peroxide-curing, general-purpose ELASTOSIL® eco R 401 (hardness: Shore A 40) and addition-curing, exceptionally tear-resistant ELASTOSIL® eco R plus 4020 solid silicone (Shore A 40).

Another highlight this year is our ELASTOSIL® LR 3078. This self-adhesive liquid silicone rubber has outstanding processing characteristics, cures rapidly and establishes a firm bond with polycarbonate thermoplastics. The adhesion system developed by WACKER is free of bisphenol A structures. The fixed rubber products have been tested for biocompatibility.

Cable accessories are often used outdoors and in the ground. This requires outstanding insulating properties. In addition, slip-on and cold-shrink accessories must be highly elastic if connections are to be permanently secure. WACKER silicone rubbers have been meeting these requirements perfectly for many years. The choice of product – solid silicone rubbers (HCR), liquid silicone rubbers (LSR), extra-liquid systems (POWERSIL® XLR®), or room-temperature-vulcanizing systems (RTV-2) – depends on the manufacturing process.

Manufacturing of cable accessories from silicone rubber can be performed by injection molding (HCR, LSR), low pressure mold filling (XLR®, RTV-2), extrusion (HCR). Using special silicone elastomers from WACKER, the electrical field strength within the cable joints, terminations and connectors can be efficiently graded to reduce localized high field strengths.

ELASTOSIL® R 512/70 OH is a peroxide-curing HCR silicone for the manufacture of silicone-insulated safety cables that maintain circuit integrity in case of fire. It forms a ceramic-like layer with high insulation resistance, good mechanical stability, and low smoke formation. ELASTOSIL® R 512/70 OH is also available as 2-component-system (ELASTOSIL® R 512/70-1 & -2). The advantage is that the properties of the compound can be adjusted easily by modifying the mixing ratio of component -1 & -2 for the particular application.
