The Asian tsunami of December 2004 caused devastation of catastrophic proportions for people in the regions affected. Thousands lost their lives or livelihoods.
WACKER employees spontaneously donated €100,000. The WACKER Group doubled the sum and topped it up with an additional €50,000. In this way funds totaling €250,000 could rapidly be passed on to relief projects without incurring any red tape. At the same time, the WACKER HILFSFOND (relief fund) was founded. True to the principle of “helping people to help themselves,” since 2005 the WACKER RELIEF FUND has been supporting programs that give victims of natural disasters the chance of a better life.
In 2012, the company relief fund asked employees to donate the cent amounts on their monthly paychecks to the fund on a regular basis. More than 4,300 people in Germany have responded to the call and are thus helping to sustain relief fund projects centered on the reconstruction and running of schools and training facilities. The WACKER Group is participating in the cent-donation program with a contribution that matches employee donations.
WACKER’s relief fund is setting a precedent not only in Sri Lanka, but also in China, Haiti and Pakistan, since the foundation focuses on education for children and young people in the aftermath of natural catastrophes.
