In ELASTOSIL® C WACKER is offering the composites industry innovative silicone system solutions – e.g. for dimensionally accurate production of reusable vacuum bags: These lead to much greater ongoing production efficiency for both prepregs and infusion technologies compared with the conventional, disposable bags.
The two-part, platinum-curing, low-viscosity silicone rubbers cure in just a few minutes at room temperature, without shrinking. The system is optimally adapted to the standard processing and manufacturing methods: In ELASTOSIL® C, it is possible to rapidly produce reusable, precision-fit, fabric-reinforced silicone vacuum bags by a spray-up or lay-up method. Once made, this silicone bag can be placed quickly and securely over the mold before each part is produced. This eliminates time-consuming packing with conventional vacuum film.
Eight-step production process for a reusable vacuum bag made from WACKER silicone
ELASTOSIL® C is processed either by the spray-up or lay-up method (shown here):
- Cut FABRIC C
- Fill the sealing groove with ELASTOSIL® C
- Create the first layer with ELASTOSIL® C
- Apply the previously-cut FABRIC C
- Create the topcoat with ELASTOSIL® C
- Cure the vacuum bag at room temperature and demold
- Post-cure the vacuum bag at the service temperature
- Attach vacuum valve
