Exterior Paints & Coatings

For exterior paints, WACKER offers solutions based on silicone chemistry, organic chemistry and the combination of both.
Exterior Paints
Our silicone-based masonry water repellents provide the most effective protection against moisture decay by forming an extremely stable, and thus highly durable, three-dimensional silicone resin network, which repels liquid water but is permeable to water vapor.
Our VAE co- and terpolymer dispersions are an attractive alternative to conventional acrylic and styrene acrylic systems for outdoor applications allowing to formulate paints that extend the longevity of houses by protecting the substrate.

For exterior paints, WACKER offers solutions based on silicone chemistry, organic chemistry or a combination of both.

Our silicone-based water repellents for concrete and masonry provide the most effective protection against water damage by forming an extremely stable, and thus highly durable, three-dimensional silicone-resin network that repels water but is permeable to water vapor.

Our VAE co- and terpolymer dispersions are attractive alternatives to conventional acrylic and styrene-acrylic systems for outdoor applications.

SILRES® BS silicone resins are used as binders or additives in different types of paints. Silicone-resin emulsion paints based on SILRES® BS binders combine the advantages of emulsion and silicate paints: they are both water-repellent and water-vapor-permeable.

Benefits:

  • Low water uptake
  • High water-vapor permeability
  • Reduced dirt pick-up
  • Scratch resistance
  • Anti-stain

The color stability of exterior paints formulated with a VAE dispersion is far superior to that of paints based on typical styrene acrylics. After 6 weeks of UV exposure, the color of the paint sample containing VINNAPAS® based on VAE (pictured above) matches the original far better than the styrene-acrylic paint sample.

VINNAPAS® co- and terpolymer dispersions allow the formulation of exterior paints with an excellent balance of environmental and performance benefits. They can be used as the sole binder or in blend systems for a variety of exterior applications, such as architectural paints or general wall paints.

Benefits:

  • Good water resistance
  • Good mechanical strength for high durability
  • Protection against efflorescence
  • Alkaline hydrolysis resistance
  • Low flammability
  • Outstanding exterior weathering behavior
  • Low solvent demand
  • Low levels of formaldehyde

The graph shows the effect of PRIMIS® SAF 9000 as a co-binder in different formulations (binder proportions: 80 / 20; facade paint with 4% blue pigment) after 14 days of curing. Appearance is assessed on a scale from 0 to 12. The lower the value, the better the appearance. In measuring snail-trail width, the lower the number the better.

PRIMIS® includes a range of binders, co-binders and highly effective additives for innovative, high-value exterior paints. The outstanding properties of PRIMIS® products enable the development of formulations with unique properties that would hardly be possible otherwise.

Some of the benefits:

  • Reduced dirt pick-up
  • Excellent color stability
  • Reduced emulsifier leaching ("snail trails")
  • Immediate protection against rain

Direct comparison under lab conditions: after a 6-hour drying time, the test surfaces are irrigated. While the standard plaster (right) does not withstand moisture, the plaster modified with PRIMIS®® KT 3000 (left) has formed a stable polymer network after only a few hours of drying under critical conditions.

SILRES® BS for silicone-modified silicate coatings are nonionic, solvent-free water-dilutable emulsions of a reactive polysiloxane. They are used in undiluted form as water-repellent additives for waterborne architectural coating materials.

Benefits:

  • Water-repellent
  • Improved ease of processing and storage stability
  • High vapor permeability

SILRES® BS for silicone resin emulsion paints and plasters (SREP®) in exterior applications are solvent-free, waterborne emulsions based on silicone resins or silicone additives. They have extraordinary processing properties and remain securely and irreversibly anchored to substrates.

Benefits:

  • Low water uptake
  • Combination of water-repellency and breathability
  • Low dirt pick-up
  • Very high UV resistance
  • Suitable for eco-label-certified coatings
  • Support energy-saving facades (CO2 reduction)
