Germany’s VCI Confers 2015 Responsible Care® Award on WACKER Logistics

Hamburg, Sep 25, 2015

Germany’s Chemical Industry Association (VCI), based in Frankfurt, has recognized three companies for their outstanding logistics projects. For this year’s Responsible Care® competition, the VCI invited entries under the slogan “We have good ideas for transport safety and sustainable logistics.” The competition helps promote the German chemical industry’s “Chemie3” (Chemistry3) sustainability initiative. The VCI presented the awards at its general assembly in Hamburg on Friday.

In this year’s Responsible Care® competition, Wacker Chemie AG won third place with a project to optimize overseas freight shipments – a sustainable strategy for effective container management. The aim was to avoid the transport of empty containers and to reduce CO2 emissions. WACKER has already achieved significant success here, cutting the number of empty containers transported by 20 percent since 2011. The comprehensive logistics strategy earned the jury’s vote for its “quantifiable success” and “optimization of the entire logistics chain.”

First prize went to TOTAL Bitumen Deutschland GmbH of Brunsbüttel for a project to optimize transport safety for hazardous materials. The jury awarded second place to DELO Industrie Klebstoffe GmbH & Co. KGaA, Windach, for a project to promote safe and sustainable logistics. The three winning projects had already come through the VCI regional heats, where several dozen companies competed.

The winners were selected by an independent jury: Egbert Biermann (German labor union for mining, chemicals and energy), Dr. Anton Erhard (Federal Institute for Materials Research), Henning Krumrey (“Wirtschaftswoche” magazine), Prof. Ferdinand Schüth (Max Planck Institute for “Coal Research”), Dr. Helge Wendenburg (Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety) and Dr. Utz Tillmann (German Chemical Industry Association).

Responsible Care® is an international chemical-industry initiative. Going beyond legal stipulations, the initiative focuses on continuously improving conditions relating to health, environmental protection and the safety of employees and neighbors.
