Chem-X – The digital backbone of the chemical industry

Standardized, digital transfer of material and product data along the entire value chain as the basis for digital product and material passports: that’s the goal of Chem-X.
We have joined forces with numerous reputable chemical and IT-systems companies for this collaborative project.

Enabling a circular economy

A shared and harmonized data ecosystem is essential for a digitally connected sector, for Industry 4.0 and for a functioning circular economy. It will strengthen the chemical industry by enabling companies to respond to market shifts faster and with greater flexibility.

As supply chains become more resilient, that resilience safeguards and expands our competitive strength. Data also reveals how and where products can be produced and used more sustainably.

The required material data can be exchanged digitally and at speed – delivered to customers in a standardized and legally compliant format.

Lower costs, greater competitiveness

The Chem-X project aims to establish a unified method for capturing data on chemical raw materials and materials throughout their life cycle. The data will then be transferred – subject to a clear authorization framework – to downstream customers quickly and digitally, using uniform, recognized standards.

Essentially, the process creates a digital twin for chemical products, also known as a material passport. The passport contains key parameters on the material’s sustainability and its recycling potential.

Chem-X is testing the technical options for collecting and computing this data.

Regulatory compliance

The chemical industry must also provide reliable material data to lawmakers. Consequently, the project also addresses regulatory requirements.

Chem-X is scheduled to run for about two years, has a total financial volume of around 20 million euros and is co-funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics. It is part of the cross-industry Manufacturing-X initiative, which is driving forward the same endeavor across all sectors.

The role model is the automotive industry, which has been developing an open, collaborative data space for its products for several years through its Catena-X project.
