New aid projects launched in Togo and Germany

The WACKER Relief Fund is supporting two new projects: a hospital in Togo and the Munich Railway Station Mission. Through the foundation’s donation program, WACKER employees provide effective aid for self-help – and the company offers additional support. The Relief Fund was established in 2005 – following the devastating 2004 tsunami in Asia – and has been doing good work around the world ever since. For example, the donation program helps ensure the ongoing operation of schools in crisis-stricken regions.

The foundation focuses in particular on supporting victims of natural disasters in Germany and other parts of the world. For example, the relief fund has contributed to the reconstruction of schools following earthquakes in China, Haiti, Nepal, and Pakistan; it has supported flood victims as well as aid organizations in crisis-stricken regions. In addition, the foundation supports development aid projects and other initiatives that assist people in need.

A place to stop when life goes off the rails

New projects have now been added: In Bavaria, the relief fund is partnering with the Bahnhofsmission, whose services range from pastoral care to overnight accommodations. “It’s important to us to support an organization in Bavaria like the Bahnhofsmission,” explains Anke Schrepfer from WACKER House, who, together with Jan Weiß, is taking over as chair of the foundation’s board. The following initiatives are being supported in particular:

  • Emergency assistance for those seeking help and an art education project at the Munich Station Mission
  • Strengthening people’s (everyday) life skills through individual support and group programs at the Passau Station Mission
  • Expansion of social counseling and crisis intervention at the Würzburg Station Mission
  • Expansion of the “Mutmacher” program at the Schweinfurt Railway Station Mission

Togo: A hospital saves lives

Another new project is a hospital in Togo, which the WACKER Relief Fund supports in cooperation with the Altötting-Burghausen Lions Club. There, in the Kingdom of Zooti, the foundation financed a solar power system for the urgently needed new building to replace a dilapidated hospital. The reliable power supply is a key factor in the hospital’s operations, which is regarded in the region as a milestone in the fight against high child mortality. The new medical infrastructure also offers hope to adults, as until now, due to a lack of medical care in the region, people often did not survive illnesses that are otherwise easily treatable.

Togo: Water kiosk uses solar power

Also in Togo, the WACKER Relief Fund has implemented two additional projects: An energy-efficient water kiosk provides clean drinking water for the schoolchildren of Adjegan and their families. A second water kiosk in Kpessi treats drinking water in a clean and energy-efficient manner. Many households in the region lack running water. And those who do have it cannot drink it because it is contaminated and can cause illness. As a result, water must be boiled – in some cases, using wood. The emissions generated by this process can be eliminated in the future thanks to water kiosks like these, financed by the WACKER Relief Fund.

Together with partner schools, the WACKER Relief Fund has been providing children and young people around the world with a springboard to a bright future for two decades. The donation program ensures the ongoing operation of schools in crisis-stricken regions.

Sri Lanka: Hope after the tsunami

In Kosgoda, the WACKER Relief Fund established the WACKER College following the devastating tsunami of Christmas 2004 – an educational center offering education from kindergarten through high school graduation, including a vocational track. The school has become the center of life for many children, as it offers them prospects for a bright future in the midst of a region marked by poverty. Thanks to the school meal program, the children receive a hot meal every day. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the need was particularly acute; at that time, the school distributed rice to families.

Haiti: An educational mission that extends beyond the school gates

The Don Bosco School in Riobé, Gressier – about 25 kilometers from the capital, Port-au-Prince – was rebuilt after the devastating earthquake in 2010. Since then, poverty has been exacerbated not only by frequent hurricanes and earthquakes but also by political unrest and gang violence. Due to these escalations, the school has recently been forced to close repeatedly. The team maintains contact with the children and their families, always with the mission of instilling hope for a better tomorrow through education. Currently, playgroups and sports activities are organized every week to provide structure to the children’s daily lives and maintain regular contact. N

Nepal: Aid after the earthquake

The WACKER Relief Fund has been supporting people in Nepal since the devastating earthquake of 2015, first enabling the construction and then the maintenance of the school in Gati. This village, where people live very modestly, is located many arduous hours away from Kathmandu Airport in the Himalayan Mountains. Travelers, always impressed by the warmth of the people there, unanimously report: “Gati has changed us and shown us what really matters.”
