Good for the gut
Gut health – the key to your overall well-being
Healthy digestion supported by a healthy gut is the foundation to our overall well-being. Today, an ever-growing number of people understand that – far more than merely the intake of nutrients – the gut plays a crucial role when it comes to good health, vitality, and even the immune system. Studies show that, for many consumers, gut health is a major aspect of overall well-being and is actively supported through nutrition and supplements. Accordingly, the demand for solutions to support gut health is growing steadily – particularly in the areas of dietary supplements and functional foods.
2’-Fucosyllactose (2’FL) – functional ingredient for innovative gut health concepts
2’-Fucosyllactose (2’FL) is a structurally defined oligosaccharide that occurs naturally in human breast milk. It belongs to the group of human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) and is classified as a non-digestible carbohydrate that passes through the upper gastrointestinal tract largely intact. This means it is not broken down by enzymes in the human body and is therefore available in the gut as a fermentable carbohydrate. In the gut, 2’-Fucosyllactose serves as a preferred substrate for selected beneficial bacteria, for example the Bifidobacterium species, and thus specifically aids the development of a healthy, balanced microbiota (Ryan et a., 2021).
The 2’FL offered by WACKER is produced by precision fermentation, a process that ensures consistently high quality and a purity of over 90%. The resulting product is a fine, white powder that is suitable for use in dietary supplements.
Thanks to its good tolerability, clearly defined chemical structure, and food-grade manufacturing processes, WACKER 2’FL is an innovative ingredient for specialized product concepts in the area of gut and microbiome-based nutritional solutions.
CAVAMAX® W6 alphadextrin – a soluble dietary fiber for beverages and other products
Dietary fibers, an essential component of balanced nutrition, play a key role in gut health. As indigestible carbohydrates, they pass through the upper digestive tract largely intact and contribute to the composition and function of intestinal contents. Soluble dietary fibers, in particular, are fermented in the large intestine and are thus an integral part of modern nutritional concepts that focus on the interaction between food and the gut. A large portion of the population does not meet the recommended daily fiber intake, which is why dietary fiber ingredients that are easy to digest and can be used in versatile applications and processing technologies are becoming increasingly important for the development of contemporary products in the area of gut health.
With CAVAMAX® W6 alphadextrin, WACKER offers a soluble dietary fiber ingredient for specialized applications in nutrition and supplementation. Alphadextrin, which comes under the category of soluble dietary fibers, is a plant-based oligosaccharide that is produced through the enzymatic conversion of starch.
CAVAMAX® W6 is not hydrolyzed by pancreatic alpha-amylases in the human gastrointestinal tract. It thus reaches the large intestine intact, where it is available as a fermentable dietary fiber. In the large intestine, alphadextrin promotes the formation of short-chain fatty acids through targeted fermentation, thereby supporting a healthy gut microbiota and the function of the intestinal barrier. For this reason, alphadextrin is used as a constituent in fiber-enriched formulations.
The product has a fiber content of at least 98% (on a dry matter basis), possesses low viscosity, and is tasteless and odorless. By virtue of its exceptional stability under high temperatures and acidic conditions, CAVAMAX® W6 is particularly suitable for powdered applications as well as for beverages and supplement formulations that demand a transparent appearance, high process stability, and a neutral sensory profile.
