Polymer binders for self-leveling compounds

Pouring self-leveling compound onto a prepared floor surface for even and smooth subfloor leveling.

Self-leveling compounds are mixed at the installation site and applied by hand or by machine (pump).

Many floor coverings, e.g. vinyl flooring, tiles or carpet, require the floor to be perfectly level and flat. Self-leveling compounds are the ideal solution: they are quick and easy to apply and yield floors that are impeccably smooth.

VINNAPAS® polymer binders are suitable for the formulation of 1-component self-leveling compounds and screeds. They optimize flow and leveling properties, increase adhesion and abrasion resistance and minimize bubble formation.

Self-leveling compounds – challenges and solutions

Typical challenges:

  • Poor flow properties and surface pin holing make application difficult and spoil the appearance
  • Low surface strength causes cracking and poor abrasion resistance
  • Critical substrates make adhesion more difficult
  • Increasing environmental standards require solutions that are sustainable

Our solution:

VINNAPAS® polymer binders optimize numerous properties of self-leveling compounds. The polymers form stable bridges within the mortar matrix, thereby increasing segregation resistance and ensuring uniform particle distribution. This increases the surface strength, reduces abrasion and minimizes cracking. At the same time, VINNAPAS® polymer binders improve the flow properties yielding impeccably smooth, pore-free surfaces.

Self-leveling compounds modified with VINNAPAS® polymer binders meet environmental standards such as Blue Angel and Emicode EC1 Plus. They are available as either dispersible polymer powders or polymer dispersions.

Depending on the VINNAPAS® class, different properties can be customized:

VINNAPAS® Class L dispersible polymer powders

  • Improve the mechanical properties and leveling properties
  • Ensure very smooth, flawless surfaces in combination with synthetic plasticizers and casein
  • Reduce surface bleeding and sedimentation

VINNAPAS® Class F dispersible polymer powders

  • Act as both binder and plasticizer
  • Allow the rheology to be set for application by hand or by pump

Both classes primarily contain vinyl acetate-ethylene (VAE) grades These comply with the requirements of European ecolabels such as Blue Angel and Emicode EC1 Plus.

FAQs on self-leveling compounds

Self-leveling compounds are flowable floor-leveling compounds that spread out after application to form a smooth, resilient surface. They are used as a subfloor for tiles, vinyl, carpet and parquet, but can also serve as a decorative, final wear layer.

Polymer modification with VINNAPAS® binders improves flow behavior, adhesion and abrasion resistance, reduces bubble formation and extends the service life of the floors.

They are used for new builds and renovations to residential and industrial buildings. Typical applications are thin- and thick-layer screeds, self-leveling flooring compounds and decorative architectural concrete floors.
