WACKER Relief Fund provides support following catastrophic flooding
Roads destroyed, villages cut off, many families without supplies: Following the severe flood disaster in Nepal, the WACKER Relief Fund is providing 10,000 euros in emergency aid. The support will benefit those affected; the fund is collaborating with the Altötting-based organization Sano Madad.
Anyone who has ever experienced bridges being closed or roads becoming impassable after a severe storm knows how dependent daily life is on a functioning infrastructure. The catastrophic flooding of August 26, 2026, has now reached almost unimaginable proportions in the mountainous regions of Nepal. Shocking images have circulated around the world, showing how roads, bridges, houses and power lines were swept away in Nepal. Thousands of people have lost loved ones or are still waiting for news about missing relatives. Access to many areas remains difficult to this day. Nepal is prone to natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods; in October, further flash flooding caused massive destruction.
Against this backdrop, the WACKER Relief Fund has provided 10,000 euros in emergency aid. The support is going to the Altötting-based organization Sano Madad, which has been helping people in Nepal for decades.
Michael Copik from HR in Burghausen is involved with the initiative and reports: “Unfortunately, the flood dealt yet another severe blow to many of our friends, sponsored children and their families in this region plagued by natural disasters.”
“Following the terrible flood, we decided to provide emergency aid in cooperation with Sano Madad, an organization that has a proven track record of working in Nepal,” explains Jan Weiss, Chair of the WACKER Relief Fund’s Board of Trustees. Among other things, the organization is now arranging helicopter flights to the crisis region because numerous roads remain impassable. It is also facilitating truck deliveries of urgently needed food and relief supplies to those affected.
Through his involvement with Sano Madad, Michael Copik is in constant contact with aid workers in Nepal. He has provided the WACKER Relief Fund with photos, for example showing how convoys of trucks carrying food are arriving in areas that were previously cut off.
This emergency aid builds on the WACKER Relief Fund’s long-standing commitment in Nepal: Since the devastating earthquake in 2015, the fund has been supporting the village of Gati. Together with the student-run company Namasté Nepal S-GmbH from the Geschwister-Scholl High School in Freiberg, the Relief Fund facilitated the reconstruction of schools and continues to contribute to the ongoing operation of the school in Gati to this day. Although this village was not directly affected by the recent catastrophic flooding, it is located in the same region.
The partner school in Gati will continue to be supported by the WACKER Relief Fund. Barbara Kraller, Chair of the Group Employee Council and a member of the fund’s Board of Trustees, also welcomes this continued support. “We’re providing aid there that actually makes a difference,” she emphasizes – still deeply impressed by the warmth of the people in Gati, whom she visited a few years ago on a private trip.
Unfortunately, the latest reports from Nepal paint a harrowing picture. At the same time, however, they also show how people are standing together, supporting one another, and organizing aid under the most difficult conditions. This is precisely the kind of solidarity that the WACKER Relief Fund aims to strengthen. Established as a relief fund in the wake of the devastating 2004 tsunami in Asia, it has been doing good work around the world ever since. Through their donations to the WACKER Relief Fund, employees provide effective aid that empowers people to help themselves. The company further supports this effort by matching employee contributions in Germany.
Employees can donate directly at any time or on a regular basis by participating in the donation program. The following options are available: Have the cents after the decimal point on their pay stubs automatically deducted each month, or donate five or ten euros per month. Participation in the donation program can be set up via the HR portal and can also be canceled at any time.
“Our donation program is crucial for securing the revenue that is indispensable for our partner schools,” emphasizes Jan Weiss. He extends his thanks to all employees who support the WACKER Relief Fund. And also to those who are new to the donation program. “By our standards, these are only small amounts, but in the regions where we are active, even small sums can make a huge difference,” emphasize Jan Weiss and Anke Schrepfer of the fund’s Board of Trustees.
Employees at sites outside Germany and external individuals can use the fund’s bank account information to make a contribution.
