Polymer binders and silicones for boards and panels

Unfinished interior work in an attic space featuring installed, unplastered drywall panels; joints that have been filled and are visible

Gypsum and fiber-cement boards are among the preferred materials when it comes to efficient, flexible and sustainable construction. Their lightness and versatility make it easy to install them quickly. But protecting them against moisture and weathering poses a key challenge.

Our VINNAPAS® polymer binders and SILRES® BS products offer high-performance solutions: they improve the adhesion, flexibility and water resistance of mortars, plasters and joint compounds and also provide boards and panels with lasting protection against moisture.

Boards and panels – challenges and solutions

Typical challenges:

  • Moisture can damage fiber-cement and gypsum boards and lead to algae, mold and efflorescence.
  • Temperature fluctuations, moisture and mechanical loads give rise to stresses, crack formation and structural damage.
  • Inadequate adhesion between boards and joint compounds impairs the surface finish.

Our solution:

VINNAPAS® polymer binders improve the adhesion and flexibility of mortars, plasters and joint compounds and provide for a robust bond between boards and coating systems. They increase strength, reduce cracking and ensure a permanently smooth surface.

SILRES® BS silicone fluids, silicone resins, silicone powders, siliconates, silanes and emulsions provide gypsum and fiber-cement boards with excellent water repellency and lasting protection against moisture.

Product properties

Silicone resins, emulsions and powdered water repellents for hydrophobizing fiber-cement boards

The benefits:

  • Improved freeze/thaw resistance
  • Reduced algal and mold growth; less efflorescence
  • Better dimensional stability in wet rooms
  • No additional water absorption at interfaces (with integral treatment)
  • No peeling of paint (with siloxane priming)
  • Suitable for air-dried and autoclaved processes

Applications:

  • Facade cladding
  • Wet rooms
Stacked gypsum boards (hydrophobized: green) on pallets, sorted and ready for use in drywall construction

Product properties

Polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS), PMHS emulsion, silicone and silicone powder for water-repellent treatment

Benefits in drywall:

  • Used as an admixture in drywall plants, it provides clear advantages over wax additives

Benefits in gypsum fiberboards:

  • Used as a surface impregnation, it provides excellent hydrophobicity

Benefits in gypsum blocks:

  • Used in emulsion form as an additive, it enhances miscibility

Applications:

  • Drywall
  • Gypsum fiberboards
  • Gypsum blocks

Product properties

VINNAPAS®: polymer dispersible polymer powders for gypsum plasters and gypsum joint compounds

The benefits of VINNAPAS® dispersible polymer powders:

  • Exceptional tensile adhesive strength on drywall and joint tapes
  • Excellent workability
  • Particularly smooth, even surfaces without cracks or gaps
  • Reduced water absorption
  • Plasticizer-free grades also available

Reduction in water absorption of a gypsum joint compound

A commercial gypsum joint compound (left bar) is mixed with a certain proportion of SILRES® POWDER G. The corresponding test specimens are then immersed in water for two hours. The height of the bars shows the extent of water absorption by the test specimens in weight-percent.

SILRES® POWDER G: powdery hydrophobizing agent for gypsum and mixtures of building materials containing gypsum

Benefits of SILRES® POWDER G:

  • Good water repellency
  • Simple handling and storage

Applications:

  • Gypsum plasters
  • Gypsum joint compounds

FAQs on boards and panels

SILRES® BS silicones create a durable hydrophobic treatment that prevents water from penetrating fiber-cement and gypsum boards and panels. This improves freeze/thaw resistance, reduces algal and mold growth and increases dimensional stability in wet rooms.

VINNAPAS® dispersible polymer powders provide excellent adhesion, improve processing properties and yield particularly smooth, crack-free surfaces. At the same time, they make manual and machine processing easier.

Many VINNAPAS® grades are plasticizer-free and enable low-VOC formulations. SILRES® BS products contribute to the longevity of gypsum boards, which consequently have a favorable carbon footprint and so promote sustainable construction.

VINNAPAS® polymer binders and SILRES® products are ideal for manufacturers of gypsum, gypsum fiber and fiber-cement boards as well as producers of joint compounds and plasters who want to develop durable, moisture-resistant and dimensionally stable systems.
