Backfill

Stetten is not only a salt mine, but its network of empty chambers has been used for the backfilling of suitable substances since the mid-1990s. Backfilling of those chambers, which have accumulated over 150 years of mining, ensures the long-term safety of the mine.

Every material received for backfilling is scrutinized and individually analyzed at the site’s lab. Modern logistics then transport the material safely below ground. Summer 2008 saw the opening of an additional route into the mine for access by normal road vehicles. That made the handling of deliveries much easier.

As Stetten is Germany’s southernmost backfilling mine, transport routes from nearby countries are significantly shorter.
