Our path to climate-neutral silicon
The first step determines the direction of the entire journey. This principle also applies to chemistry. Thousands of products are made from silicon - microchips and solar modules, but also all types of silicones. Lower CO2 emissions at the start of the value chain have a major impact on the carbon footprint of all the resulting products. With three specific measures, WACKER is on its way to climate-neutral silicon value chains.
In March 2025, WACKER signed a long-term contract for the supply of biocarbon. The contract comes into force as soon as the agreed requirements are met, such as the successful completion of the qualification process.
WACKER has demonstrated the amine scrubbing method for removing carbon dioxide on one of its own processes. The test campaign was successfully completed at the end of June 2024, achieving separation rates of over 95%. For implementation, customers who are willing to source the CO2 from WACKER, and a regulatory framework that turns the process into a business case are now required.
