The initiative is based on established principles such as those subscribed to by the United Nations’ Global Compact and Responsible Care®, the chemical industry’s sustainability initiative. Together, TfS members organize supplier evaluations using questionnaire analyses and audits, with independent auditing bodies assessing the suppliers’ sustainability performance on the basis of criteria tailored to the chemical industry. The aspects assessed range from the environment, health and safety, labor and human rights through to ethical company management. The audits include on-site checks, for example of production facilities and office buildings.
The information on sustainability obtained from the supplier assessments is made available to all TfS members via a web-based platform. This negates the need for non-standardized, company-specific check programs and reduces red tape for suppliers and customers.
WACKER is the twelfth company to become a TfS member, after AkzoNobel, Arkema, BASF, Bayer, Clariant, DSM, Evonik Industries, Henkel, Lanxess, Merck and Solvay. By joining TfS, WACKER will be able to improve the sustainability of its entire supplier chain. TfS also greatly simplifies matters for the suppliers, because they no longer have to provide proof of sustainable practices separately for each individual customer.
