Follow the VINNAPAS® Freight Container

Experience the container’s exciting trip around the world! Follow the container and see what happens inside, outside and all around.

March – April 2013: Nuremberg – Burghausen, Germany – Miami, USA

  • Tuesday, March 14, 2013

“All my bags are packed and I'm ready to go ...” We finally made it: the container is ready and starts its exciting travel around the globe in Taunusstein, Germany. Have a good trip!

  • Monday, March 18, 2013

Off of the truck and into the hall: the forklift truck is ready and waiting to pick up the valuable bright-orange cargo. After completing a journey of about four hours, the container arrives at its first station today, the European Coatings Show 2013 in Nuremberg. And by the look of things, it handled the trip with flying colors...

  • Monday, March 18, 2013

A little to the left, a little more to the right, just a little closer... a very careful touch is required when approximately 3 metric tons of container must be finely adjusted. And the countdown is ticking: only 16 hours left until the tradeshow opens...

  • Tuesday, March 19, 2013

We did it! The freight container is in place with the heavy doors open in the front and back. The show can begin: today, tomorrow and the next day, the first worldwide WACKER product exhibition in a freight container provides an unusual look at an extraordinary technology for visitors to the tradeshow.

  • Tuesday, March 19, 2013

So what do VINNAPAS® experts think of the VINNAPAS® Dispersions Roadshow? Arno von der Eltz, president of WACKER POLYMERS, is just as excited about the idea for the container exhibition as Sabine Zallinger, head of WACKER ACADEMY (right), and Susanne Calland, marketing communications manager and the project manager of the campaign (left). Now we just have to wait and see how the visitors to the tradeshow react to our exhibition...

  • Tuesday, March 19, 2013

The first visitors enter the container exhibition: and it is met with awe and excitement... the pair carefully reads every single milestone on the container's history wall – and they are not alone for long... we are thrilled that the exhibition is such a hit.

  • Tuesday, March 19, 2013

A new take on chemistry class – having the lecture in a freight container instead of a classroom. Dr. Lena Schneider from WACKER explains the technology behind VINNAPAS® Dispersions and their many areas of application in an entertaining and informative manner. The students are excited – a welcome change from a traditional lecture.

  • Wednesday, March 20, 2013

Halfway through the ECS: these young men know exactly what interests them... they are immediately attracted to the movable tiles with touchable product samples and ask intelligent questions. Learning by doing at its finest.

  • Wednesday, March 20, 2013

Come on in – the container has become a huge attraction in the middle of the overwhelmingly traditional tradeshow booths in Hall 1. Many of the passing visitors take more than just a quick look, they are lured into the container...

  • Thursday, March 21, 2013

4 p.m. – ECS 2013 closes its doors in one hour. Approximately 26,000 visitors made their way through the 34,600 m2 exhibition area. And our container? It was like an island in the middle of all the hubbub, where many visitors got "stranded." Everyone who visited the exhibit could look, touch, read and play – and was excited: from "Great to see something different!" to "Unbelievable, all the different ways dispersions can be used!" and "Definitely a great idea!", we received lots of positive feedback. We are delighted with the success off the kick-off.

  • Friday, March 22, 2013

8 a.m. – The visitors are gone, and the breakdown crews have arrived. There is banging and clattering everywhere as tradeshow booths are disassembled and the halls empty out. Time for our container to close its doors and start to make its way to the next station. Goodbye, we will meet again in Burghausen!

  • Friday, March 22, 2013

On the road again! Luckily, a container can be cleaned up much quicker than a tradeshow booth... only a few hours after our mobile showroom took off from the ECS in Nuremberg, it arrives at the gate to the Burghausen site.

  • Friday, March 22, 2013

For the first time, the VINNAPAS® Dispersions anniversary container arrives on home ground. In April, the unusual exhibit will be on display at the Burghausen site. Our container looks a little exotic in the middle of all the industrial pipes... for a good reason!

  • Friday, March 22, 2013

The team behind the roadshow: Susanne Calland, marketing communications manager and project manager of the 75 Years of VINNAPAS® Dispersions campaign (middle); Mareike Wolters, manager of trade fairs and exhibitions; and Dr. Tony Horneff, global market manager of adhesives, are excited that the anniversary exhibit will soon be on display at WACKER's largest production site in Burghausen.

  • Tuesday, March 26, 2013

“And the winner is…” – many visitors at the ECS 2013 participated in the 75 Years of VINNAPAS® Dispersions quiz, which was put on exclusively for the campaign kick-off. Dr. Christoph Kniehase from the WACKER legal department, Susanne Calland and Mareike Wolters, Corporate Communications, draw the winner of the iPad4.

  • Monday, April 15, 2013

So, here’s our exhibition container. Let’s see what’s happening. Although there are always a great many freight containers here on the factory premises, no one at WACKER’s main production plant in Burghausen has ever seen a bright orange one with an almost two meter high “75” on it – and, yet ...

  • Tuesday, April 16, 2013, 10:35 a.m.

...at 10:30 a.m. precisely, the container opens its doors – and it doesn’t take long before the first curious visitors turn up. Each of them wants to be the first to see what’s going on ...

  • Tuesday, April 16, 2013, 10:43 a.m.

Scarcely 10 minutes later, the first group of visitors crowds into the container. And Dr. Marion Killat, a WACKER ACADEMY coach, offers eager WACKER employees detailed explanations, guiding them around the world of VINNAPAS® dispersions.

  • Tuesday, April 16, 2013, 11:10 a.m.

After the tour, the three interactive iPads are quickly appropriated: the interactive content is an entertaining, informative and fun way to learn about VINNAPAS® brand dispersions, as well as their history, technology, and sheer variety. After all, modern technology makes it convenient and easy to obtain information ...

  • Tuesday, April 16, 2013, 11:12 a.m.

If the iPads are all in use or if you’d like to try out the products for real, just go to the reversible “touch & feel” panels: the application of a particular product is described on the front, while background information can be found on the reverse – and all these products contain VINNAPAS® dispersions ...

  • Monday, April 22, 2013, 1:15 p.m.

The day of departure: The “75 Years of VINNAPAS® Dispersions” anniversary container stood on WACKER’s Burghausen factory grounds for two weeks. About 250 WACKER POLYMERS employees visited this unique traveling exhibition – an opportunity for them to scrutinize, experience, discover and, above all, to be amazed at the wealth of fascinating details hidden behind the VINNAPAS® brand. All the same, the time has come for the container to move on – and even the dreary weather reflects the mood ...

  • Monday, April 22, 2013, 4:00 p.m.

All loaded up and raring to go! The container’s journey around the world continues – and the next port of call is a great distance away: across the ocean to far-off Asia. Our container is going to spend the next six weeks or so out at sea: Ship Ahoy!

  • Tuesday, April 23, 2013

We did it! Our container survived its first big trip across the Atlantic Ocean, arriving in the sunny city of Miami in the American southeast. Maybe it even went down Ocean Drive? In any event, it has already found its rightful place at the IDEA Show and all that’s left is a bit of fine-tuning... Though we are a little perplexed: wasn’t that container still in Burghausen just yesterday? How can that be!?! Let’s look into it...

  • Wednesday, April 24, 2013

The tradeshow’s first day kicks off – and it doesn’t take long before the first curious visitors turn up to examine the container’s interior. The IDEA Show is all about the newest market trends and developments for technical textiles and nonwovens – and our container is a welcome change there since it provides additional infos about historical events and features a fun interactive memory game.

  • Friday, April 26, 2013

It’s all over! The tradeshow center’s lights are out and the container is closed. Our conclusion after the first international tradeshow appearance is that the unusual freight-container exhibition is a big hit! Perhaps this is because there is something for everyone, whether for history buffs or technology and engineering enthusiasts. By the way: isn’t it fascinating that such a small forklift truck can carry a 3.5-metric-ton container with seemingly no major effort!?!

  • Monday, April 29, 2013

On the road again: from the West Coast via endless highways on the way to Kentucky. And “Kentuckians” are certain: America’s heart beats here. In any event, our anniversary exhibition is traveling to a region which has made history, too. After all, Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky, as was Zachary Taylor, the 12th President of the USA. Plus, Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote her famous novel “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” here and the worldwide renowned Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey is produced here. Our extraordinary 75 Years of VINNAPAS® container is thus in an ideal setting...

May – June 2013: Calvert City – Allentown, USA

  • Friday, May 3, 2013

Essentially, this should be a ‘home game’ for our roadshow – here at WACKER’s Calvert City site. And yet, the freight container seems somewhat out of place on the site grounds. Is everybody off celebrating George Clooney’s birthday? Yes, even Hollywood’s heartthrob comes from this region... At least we have a bit more time to prepare for the debut at an overseas site.

  • Monday, May 13, 2013

Finally, the container comes to life! Ron De Bernardi, safety engineer, is impressed by the exhibition: “Very informative, it helped to understand the history behind the company I work for.” And his colleague Bobby Rose, quality manager, adds: “I enjoyed the pictures with the captions relating to WACKER POLYMERS’ history.” Yes, the miniature museum is really something special by making VINNAPAS® dispersions’ success noticeable and literally tangible – and all employees look forward to being a part of this history. A thought shared by Mary Beth Hudson, too...

  • Tuesday, May 14, 2013

Mary Beth Hudson, vice president and site manager of Calvert City states: “The exhibit provides the opportunity for employees to learn more about the history of WACKER dispersions. It reinforced the pride we all have in continuing to be a part of WACKER’s success.” For four days, the freight container exhibition was the focus at WACKER’s Calvert City site. And now we continue down the American highways, this time to WACKER’s Allentown, Pennsylvania site.

  • Wednesday, May 22, 2013

That’s what lucky winners look like: Ms. Seniz Sungur of Kalekim A.S. Turkey is our winner of the 75 Years of VINNAPAS® Dispersions competition at the European Coatings Show 2013: she won a brand new iPad 4. Congratulations!

  • Monday, June 10, 2013 – 9:37 am

After 925 miles and 14 hours on the highway, the container has reached the next production site: WACKER Allentown. The precious cargo had scarcely been maneuvred carefully into position before the first employees strolled up to check it out: Wonder what's inside?

This is not the first time the third-largest state in the US has stored a precious possession. In 1777, the Liberty Bell was temporarily hidden in Allentown because it was feared that the British might melt it down to make munitions during the American War of Independence. And now, 236 years later, Allentown is hosting the VINNAPAS® Dispersions jubilee exhibition.

  • Wednesday, June 19, 2013 – 8:27 am

Good morning, Allentown! The sun is shining, the flags are waving in front of the container and last-minute preparations are underway to get everything ready for today's grand employee event. Not long now...

  • Wednesday, June 19, 2013 – 8:52 AM

What a crush! It's as crowded as Times Square in front of the container. The employees can't wait to be finally allowed to visit the jubilee exhibition in honor of one of WACKER's most successful product brands ever.

  • Wednesday, June 19, 2013 – 9:10 AM

The laughter speaks volumes: the wait is over!

  • Wednesday, June 19, 2013 – 9: 17 am

These three ladies are fascinated by the parallel timeline of 75 years of VINNAPAS® dispersions alongside world events. Wonder which milestone impressed them most...

  • Wednesday, June 19, 2013 – 10:15 AM

An hour later, it is still difficult to pick your way through the jam-packed container. But these two visitors have managed it and stationed themselves before the product tiles to peruse them at their leisure.

  • Wednesday, June 19, 2013 – 14:22 pm

Any questions about the application areas for VINNAPAS® dispersions? These two employees have boned up on the topic and could probably answer as quick as a flash. Perhaps they could field questions at next week's container event in Allentown – distributor's day with Brenntag?

  • Wednesday, June 26, 2013

Welcome! The management of Brenntag North America has come to visit WACKER in Allentown. A quick group photo is taken before the busy program gets underway. The highlight of the day for the visitors: a guided tour of the VINNAPAS® Dispersions jubilee exhibition.

  • Wednesday, June 26, 2013

“You live and learn.” A sentiment also echoed by this young man playing the VINNAPAS® Memory Game for learning about the various applications for the dispersions.

“Excellent! Well Done! Enjoyed the show and tell, as well as the interactive ipads!,” enthuses Cas Kleczko, Senior Account Manager at Brenntag Specialties …

  • Wednesday, June 26, 2013

What's got these two so interested? Would you know which products are produced at which WACKER site, how big the site is and how many colleagues work there? Video clips and animations on the info monitor answer these and other questions about the company.

  • Wednesday, June 26, 2013

So this is what an indoor paint containing a WACKER product feels like ... interesting, says this Brenntag employee. Eric Haajer, Vice President Industrial Market at Brenntag Specialties, too, is fulsome in his praise for the exhibits: “Excellent hands-on representation of the applications for the products. Very informative for newcomers and customers of WACKER and VINNAPAS®.”

  • Wednesday, June 26, 2013

Lew Clark, Vice President Brenntag Specialties comments: “Very clever exhibit and nice idea to promote the VINNAPAS® name and business traditions.” Naturally, we are delighted with so much praise and then we even come across two gentlemen who want to have another look when the event is over – no problem! All they have to do is scan the QR code using their smart phones and they will be directed straight to the online version of the exhibition.

July 2013: Ulsan – Daejeon – Anyang – Um-seong, South Korea

  • Monday, July 15, 2013

The VINNAPAS® Container spent five weeks in Allentown. Today it's time for its next trip – what's the destination this time? Next stop on the world tour: Brazil! Wait a moment! Didn't the container set off through Asia back in April? So who has been traveling around the USA over the last few months?! Hmmm, let's keep a close eye on this container, but take a look at what's happening in Asia...

  • Tuesday, July 16, 2013

... Indeed! Thousands of miles away we find what we’re looking for: in Ulsan, a WACKER production site in South Korea. Yesterday the USA, today South Korea? How is that possible? Let’s find out...

  • Tuesday, July 16, 2013

The solution to the mystery is that our container has a twin, and this has been touring round Asia for several weeks. You don’t have to be a genius to realize that the container needs support to be able to master its mammoth tour by land and sea. Well, such an anniversary doesn’t take place every day – and an exhibition held in a container is even rarer. Thus our container had quite a schedule ahead in Asia...

  • Tuesday, July 16, 2013

The event tour kicked off on June 26 at the WACKER site in Ulsan with a big party for the employees, which was opened by Matt Cho, managing director of WACKER Korea.

  • Tuesday, July 16, 2013

After that, they enjoyed a guided tour of the exhibition and an anniversary luncheon together, both organized by Ki-Hong Cho, Ulsan plant manager. “It was a very fun event and memorable”, said one employee. Well, then – let’s take a souvenir photo all together!

  • Tuesday, July 16, 2013

Nine days later, on July 5, the container was standing almost 200 km away from Ulsan at Hanbat National University in Daejeon, where it featured in the program of the 37th “Lectures on Petrochemicals” series “Fundamentals and Applications of Emulsion Polymerization.”

  • Tuesday, July 16, 2013

As the picture shows, the lecture theater was full. The topic drew many students as well as academics and technical experts. After all, paints and coatings, especial user-friendly and low-environmental-impact products, are an important growth market in Asia.

  • Tuesday, July 16, 2013

The audience listened with great interest to Dr. Jae-Ha Kim, director of the dispersions business team at WACKER Asia-Pacific, who talked about dispersions, VAE technology and areas of application. Then it was off to view the exhibition.

  • Tuesday, July 16, 2013

During the guided tour, the visitors had lots of questions about VAE, which kept the two guides, Dong-Hun Choi, regional marketing manager (right) and Woo-Jae Lee, technical manager (back) very busy.

  • Thursday, July 18, 2013 – 9:00 a.m.

This morning we finally manage to catch up with the container: we are there live when the anniversary exhibition opens its doors at our customer Noroo Paint & Coatings’ site in Anyang 130 km away from Ulsan. The container’s Korean hosts from Noroo and WACKER, especially Jang-Seon Yun (second from left) and Dae-Hee Lee (right) , both sales managers at WACKER Korea, who arranged the event, are already excitedly awaiting their guests with a fascinating infotainment tour organized exclusively for the employees...

  • Thursday, July 18, 2013

...including the “Milestones from 1938 to 2013,” the “touch & feel” product panels, and more fascinating stuff. 200 enthusiastic visitors don’t want to miss out – the container gets cozy...

  • Thursday, July 18, 2013

It is the iPads, in particular, with their entertaining videos, games and infographics on applications, megatrends and benefits of VAE dispersions that catch the visitors’ attention. “Excuse me, could we interrupt for a moment and ask you how you like the exhibition?”

  • Thursday, July 18, 2013

“It looks very special and eye-catching.”

“The container is simple but very compact, a good idea to make that kind of mobile exhibition container.”

“A good chance to understand more, not only for the R&D team, and purchasing team, but also other customer teams such as marketing and production colleagues.”

Dong-Hun Choi, regional marketing manager at WACKER Korea, who moderated the program, can be rightly proud of such fantastic feedback. Will the exhibition be so well received tomorrow?

  • Friday, July 19, 2013

The VINNAPAS® dispersions container traveled to its last event location overnight. Today it is to be found at our coatings customer Chokwang in Um-seong, as part of a WACKER ACADEMY inhouse training course. Incidentally: this year Chokwang celebrates 66 successful years in the market. And while the last preparations are still being made at the container outside...

  • Friday, July 19, 2013

...inside at Chokwang the employees are already gathered and are getting all the important facts and figures on WACKER and VINNAPAS® from Dr. Yong-Hae Choi, chief technical manager at the WACKER Korea technical center – first in theory...

  • Friday, July 19, 2013

...and then in practice, in the VINNAPAS® container itself, where WACKER Korea has organized a really great program. And what do Chokwang employees say about their WACKER day?“

It was very nice and effective to see product samples and their applications right after the lecture, so I could get a clearer picture and understand better.”

“Very impressive! I will recommend that my company also does an event like this container tour.”

September 2013: Sao Paulo, Brazil – Guanghzou, China

  • Sunday, September 15, 2013

After a well-deserved summer break, our anniversary container continues on its journey today – in South America. São Paulo is Brazil’s commercial hub, one of the world’s most populated cities with its 11 million residents, that offers numerous cultural attractions, more than 12,000 (!) restaurants and an impressive soccer museum. However, for now, another “museum” is the city’s focal point – and it’s just rolling up ...

  • Monday, September 16, 2013

…the VINNAPAS® dispersions exhibition is stopping at the ABRAFATI, the coatings industry’s most important tradeshow in South America. Before everything – especially in Brazil – starts to revolve around round leather balls, goals and soccer gods in nine month’s time, international exhibitors are showcasing the latest coatings technologies and key trends here at the tradeshow. What exactly does our container have in common with a penalty kick? To score points, both have to be in the optimum position ...

  • Monday, September 16, 2013

...and this worked out perfectly at the tradeshow booth: the bright-orange container offers an extraordinary backdrop for the booth’s visitors, where they can relax, enjoy a coffee and get information on the latest dispersions – which, very conveniently, can be experienced first hand only a few steps away in the VINNAPAS® dispersions exhibition.

  • Tuesday, September 17, 2013

Inside the container, Reinaldo Passini, Pedro Marani and Camila Dietrich from Wacker Química do Brasil are all ready to expertly explain the dispersions’ history, technology and industrial applications. But the three Brazilian employees have more to tell. Did you know that 1938 not only marked the start of VINNAPAS® dispersions’ road to success, but that it was also the year in which Brazilian soccer player Leônidas da Silva was crowned the top scorer at the World Cup and played part of the match barefoot? Which goes to show that, at our exhibition, you can also learn about history that moved the world.

  • Monday, September 23, 2013

Do all roads lead to Rome? Yes. And to Guangzhou. Let’s take a look across the Pacific at a city which, in the ninth century, was considered the embarkation point for the “Silk Road on the Sea.” Nowadays, Guangzhou, which is also known as Canton, is benefiting from its proximity to the economic hub of Hong Kong, and is setting all sorts of records. The high-speed railway line linking it to Beijing is the world’s longest at 2,298 km; Asia’s highest man-made waterfall can be found in the center of Guangzhou; located on the Pearl River, the city is home to the Canton Tower which, at 600 m, was once the world’s tallest television tower; and today, in 2013, for the first time at China Adhesives Show, there stands a sea-freight container that is doubling as an exhibition. And here it comes, our luminous orange container...

  • Tuesday, September 24, 2013

Our Anniversary Container managed to find its own way through the streets of this metropolis with its 8.5 million inhabitants. It might have been easier to follow a public bus. This is the most popular mode of transport here and it is extremely cheap. A ticket costs 1 or 2 yuan (approx. 12 or 24 euro cents), depending on whether or not the bus is air-conditioned. And that leaves the Cantonese more money in their pockets to buy food. In China, the Cantonese have a reputation for eating anything that swims, flies or has four legs – but not submarines, airplanes or tables. Hmm, no mention of containers there... Joking aside, Cantonese cuisine is famous all around the world for its tasty dishes. Luckily, the fork lift driver who is hoisting our container off the truck just now seems to have other things on his mind at the moment...

  • Wednesday, September 25, 2013

Day 1 at China Adhesives. People are already gathering at the booth. Just one last, quick check before the container welcomes its first visitors – first impressions are important, after all. By the way, the Cantonese are also famous for their friendliness and cordial business manner, as well as their love of flowers: the gardens, parks and balconies of apartment blocks are a sea of color and the air is heavy with the fragrance of flowers. That comes as no surprise when we take a closer look at the booth...

  • Thursday, September 26, 2013

Day 2 sees no let-up in the number of visitors to our container. This particular group is so taken with the numerous possibilities that the exhibition offers for learning more about VINNAPAS® dispersions and WACKER that they pose straight away for a souvenir photo with technical manager Ping Zhang from WACKER Shanghai.

  • Saturday, September 28, 2013

Bye-bye Guangzhou – we had a great time! More than 100 visitors to China Adhesives had been curious to know why a shipping container had been plonked right in the middle of an exhibition hall. All in all, it was a great success for the VINNAPAS® Dispersions Anniversary Exhibition, which is now making its way to Shanghai. Where we’ll really have to keep an eye on the container. After all, Shanghai is the world’s largest container port– it wouldn’t do for our container to be loaded onto the wrong ship...

November 2013: Shanghai – Nanjing, China

  • Wednesday, November 20, 2013

Well then, where is our container? The key tradeshow Chinacoat is in full swing, and there is no sign of our 75th anniversary container. How can this be in such an impressive city as Shanghai? Shanghai is one of the world’s largest cities, whose population already reached one million at the beginning of the twentieth century. It is home to the world’s largest container port, and Shanghai is the only place in the world where you can travel on a magnetic levitation train – the Shanghai Transrapid – as part of the public transportation network. Perhaps our container will also levitate by soon?

  • Wednesday, November 20, 2013

... and look – there it is! It didn’t come via “maglev,” but our mobile anniversary exhibition was properly laden and arrived on schedule at the Chinacoat in Shanghai. And the line of visitors is the best proof: naturally everyone wants to know what’s inside the bright orange container ...

  • Thursday, November 21, 2013

“Touching” is expressly encouraged here. In addition to providing educational information, the practical “touch & feel” panels give the exhibition visitors a tactile experience of the applications of VINNAPAS® dispersions.

  • Friday, November 22, 2013

The time journey through 75 years of VINNAPAS® dispersions is also a true, discussion-provoking crowd-puller. Then, after three exciting days in Shanghai, our container sets its sights on its next Asian target, namely Nanjing, the largest city in eastern China after Shanghai.

  • Tuesday, December 10, 2013 – 7:54 a.m.

Shanghai and Nanjing are only 305 kilometers apart, and, like a piece of art, our orange-colored container blends into the red sky of the dawn. The final preparations are being made for its big day today, when the anniversary exhibition is being hosted by Wacker Chemicals Nanjing. With a capacity of 120,000 metric tons per year of VINNAPAS® vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer (VAE) dispersions, this plant complex is one of the largest of its kind in China.

  • Tuesday, December 10, 2013 – 9:15 a.m.

The manager of the WACKER Nanjing site, Thiaga Raj, welcomes the visitors to the exhibition and has a cracker of a surprise up his sleeve – more on this later ... Nanjing residents are fond of celebrating, for instance with a long tradition of getting together to mount the city wall every January 16, bathing in the Qingxi River on March 3, and hiking to the Purple Mountains on September 9. These days not only does the International Plum Blossom Festival attract thousands of domestic and international tourists, but the Baima Peach Blossom and Kite Festival, the Jiangxin Fruit Festival and the Osmanthus Blossom Festival at the Linggu Temple enchant the Chinese and visitors from all over the world in equal measure.

  • Tuesday, December 10, 2013 – 9:37 a.m.

Bang! The VINNAPAS® dispersions anniversary event kicks off with a surprise – a colorful shower of confetti succeeds in putting the 40 employees and guests from Nanjing Chemical Industrial Park in a good mood. But wait a minute: what is hiding under the shiny red stuff?

  • Tuesday, December 10, 2013 – 9:45 a.m.

People here have a sweet tooth, too, and WACKER is offering its guests a typical Chinese specialty to indulge in. The small white peach-shaped balls (what you would call “dumplings” in Bavaria) are a traditional form of birthday cake and symbolize longevity and prosperity. These small little cakes don’t only look good …

  • Tuesday, December 10, 2013 – 10:11 a.m.

... they also taste good! Everyone is glad of this sweet treat before they enter the exhibition, i.e. the container. At the same time, containers are nothing special for a Nanjing denizen. After all, the harbor at Nanjing is China’s largest inland port and the largest container harbor on the Yangzi River. The contents of our container are a big surprise for the visitors, though, and the crush inside is correspondingly large. It was a good idea to have refreshments beforehand; by the time everyone has seen and read everything, the sun is high on the horizon ...

March 2014: Dubai, UAE

  • Sunday, March 9, 2014

In Dubai, people have always caught “the big ones” – meaning real-live fish from the Arabian Sea. And for a long time, they made their living from fishing. The pearl divers subsequently made this city, the largest in the United Arab Emirates, a successful and world-renowned commercial center. Today, lively Dubai is the business hub and tourism center of the seven Emirates, and is known for its wonders: the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, stands here majestically in the new Dubai Downtown district. At its feet lie the Dubai Fountain (the largest dancing water feature) and the Dubai Mall – with its own ice-skating rink and an aquarium spanning three floors. The “Mall of the Emirates” is also unique: with the world’s largest indoor snow park and a ski run that can be traversed even when the temperature outdoors reaches 45°C. Our anniversary exhibition fits in very well here!

After all, our orange-colored freight container with its giant “75” is also unique at this year’s Middle East Coatings Show (MECS). The tradeshow has barely opened its doors and the first guests are already arriving at the booth. They enjoy their welcome coffee, which is traditionally taken unsweetened and seasoned with cardamom in Dubai, while learning about the newest products and applications that WACKER is presenting for all of the region’s key industries. Do you think that the man in the thawb , Saudi Arabia’s traditional male cloak, was more enticed by the smell of the “qahwa” or by the interesting topics?

We too conform to local customs and offer our guests national specialties to keep them going strong during their tradeshow visit. After all, what would a stay in the Middle East be without its wonderfully sweet and tasty delicacies? The local cuisine is very diverse and a true feast for the eyes, as well as the stomach. Shâhiya tayyeba! (Enjoy!)

“Shukran, Dubayy!” (Thanks, Dubai!) Our anniversary container has experienced three exciting tradeshow days. We’re going to ask how it fared in the Orient: “wonderful - it explains the history really nicely”, “the arrangement was very informative and depicts the vast history and experience in the industry”, “fantastic presentation and really self-explanatory”. Well, that sounds just super! The WACKER Dubai tradeshow team and its German colleagues are pleased with the positive reception and say “ma´a salama!” (Goodbye!) – and “Hello Atlanta!”. After all, our container is now off to its final appearance before heading back home to Burghausen. Where it awaits... oops, we almost just gave it away!

April 2014: Atlanta, USA

“Welcome Atlanta!” In 1996, the vibrant capital of Georgia, USA, glittered in Olympic gold, silver and bronze; in 2014, a bright orange container “runs” into town – the VINNAPAS® dispersions 75 Years Anniversary exhibition has come to Atlanta. The Olympic creed that “it’s taking part that counts” also applies to our container at the American Coatings Show this year. Only instead of the Olympic motto “faster, higher, stronger,” 18 years on the watchwords are “more innovative, more efficient, more sustainable.” And hardly has the anniversary container taken up its position on the starting blocks do the first exhibition visitors arrive. Let’s see who they are this time …

With luck, maybe even a few VIPs may swing by, because the capital near the Atlantic coast is not short of celebrities: the most famous son of the city is Nobel Peace Prize laureate Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., while Margaret Mitchell, the well-known best-selling author of a Southern epic found herself “Gone with the Wind” here. But the modern metropolis has more to offer: the local airport boasts the largest passenger volume worldwide, and a company known globally for the caffeinated, sweet fizzy drink it manufactures is headquartered here. We are not allowed to name any names here, but perhaps you can take a virtual sightseeing trip through Atlanta. In any case, our exhibition fits in here really well.

And we have the same picture everywhere: in Atlanta, too, our container quickly fills with interested visitors – looking at the info screen with movies, facts and figures about WACKER, examining the flip panels with real product samples, and perusing the iPads with their special app focusing on the history, technology and versatility of VINNAPAS®. And just as diverse as the exhibition are its visitors – who or what is looking around the corner over there?

Just look at that! A walking act at the American Coatings Show is curious about us and has come over to “research” the container – wow! Looking very cool, he strolls slowly through our container with his huge black sunglasses, takes a close look at everything, rocks his huge head now and then, nods approvingly and finally bends down to take one of the little souvenirs as a reminder ...

... a whole row of bright yellow rubber ducks is lining our anniversary container! At the latest since the original US children’s series “Sesame Street” and the first appearance of Ernie and Bert in the ’70s, these little rubber ducks are a children’s favorite – and Ernie is surely the world’s greatest champion of this particular animal species? Maybe he paid us a visit, too? We didn’t see him, but somebody left us this charming squeaky greeting. The rubber duck brigade is one of the many unforgettable moments on this 14-month journey that is now coming to an end.

The American Coatings Show has closed its doors and in our container, equally, a hush has settled: the monitor and iPads are switched off, the timeline is no longer lit, the large swing doors are closed – our bright orange container is waiting to be picked up and returned home, where its exciting journey began 388 days ago. It has traveled thousands of miles and revealed its secrets to thousands of visitors through many events. We say thank you for the great time and wave to it one last time ... 75 Years of VINNAPAS® Dispersions – take care!
