Infrastructure & Concrete Modification

Among the products that WACKER offers are modifiers that substantially boost the efficiency of sprayed-concrete application.

WACKER offers a range of highly specialized products for concrete: from modifiers and additives that open up totally new applications by optimizing concrete’s key properties, to binders for repair mortars, through to water-repellent agents for bulk hydrophobization and in situ impregnation. Both our silane and silicone products and our polymeric modifiers are backed up by decades of expertise and comprehensive service that you can rely on.

SILRES® BS silane and silane/siloxane formulations
SILRES® BS products can be used as additives for all reinforced and non-reinforced concrete structures. Our additives slash water absorption, protect against efflorescence among other things and prolong the service life of concrete structures.
SILRES® BS products comply with DIN EN 934-2 across a number of application areas.

Benefits:

  • Reduction in water absorption
  • Reduction in water damage
  • Retention of high water-vapor permeability
  • High alkali stability
  • High UV resistance
  • No change in surface appearance
  • High degree of environmental compatibility

Application:

  • Precast concrete units
  • Facade elements
  • Paving stones
  • Concrete pipes

Polymeric modifiers of the ETONIS® 1000 S product family are ideal for quickly and cost-effectively stabilizing unpaved roads and parking lots that are subjected to heavy traffic.

Benefits:

ETONIS® 1000 S modifiers have many benefits that support time-saving, cost-effective construction methods:

  • Use of existing material
  • Suitable for all substrates
  • Permanent increase in load-bearing capacity
  • Improved shear strength
  • High resistance to frost, erosion and wear
  • Increased maintenance intervals

Application:

Stabilization of unpaved roads, such as forest paths and access roads

Polymeric modifiers of the ETONIS® 3000 W product family make concrete adhere very strongly to smooth substrates, such as metal and wet rock. The modified concrete is ideal for water management and tunneling and also provides reliable protection against hydrostatic pressure.

Benefits:

ETONIS® 3000 W modifiers impart outstanding properties to concrete:

  • Strong adhesion, even to metal and wet rock
  • High elasticity combined with compressive strength
  • High resistance to CO2, chlorides and sulfates
  • Low water/cement ratio for high strength and a barrier against water
  • Good pumpability

This translates to benefits in the application of sprayed concrete too:

  • Reduced rebound
  • Less material needed and faster application
  • Less waste material and lower disposal costs
  • Less risk of blockage and long downtimes
  • Faster, economical construction

Applications:

Wet and dry spraying onto smooth, wet substrates, during the construction or remediation of tunnels and sewers.

VINNAPAS® dispersible polymer powders
VINNAPAS® dispersible polymer powders enhance the technical performance and the processing and wetting properties of repair mortars.

Benefits:

  • Slower drying of thin layers
  • Greater impermeability to CO2 and harmful substances, such as road salt
  • Better freeze-thaw resistance
  • Ideal adhesion on concrete and steel
  • Greater deformability and flexural strength
  • Lower modulus of elasticity
  • Enhanced processing and wetting properties

Application:

  • Walls
  • Basements
  • Bridges

ETONIS® 5000
ETONIS® 5000 P modifier allows you to formulate concrete mixtures that can withstand considerable mechanical stress, frequent freeze-thaw cycles and chemical degradation.

Benefits:

  • Hydrophobic effect protects the reinforcement against corrosion
  • Crack-bridging properties due to good extensibility
  • Excellent bond between repaired and aged concrete
  • Short drying times

Application:

  • Road surfacing and remediation
  • Remediation of road surfaces damaged by alkali-silica reactions
  • Construction of wastewater treatment and biogas plants, as well as sewers
  • Agricultural structures, such as fermentation and fertilizer silos

SILRES® BS silane and silane/siloxane formulations
Concrete parts can be reliably protected by impregnation with SILRES® BS silanes and silanes/siloxanes. These environmentally sound water-repellent agents help buildings keep their value, protect them against both the elements and structural damage, and lower maintenance costs. They comply with the current DIN EN 1504-2 standard.

SILRES® BS water-repellent agents penetrate deeply into the concrete, protecting it against damp brought on by rain, thaw and snow, and against damage by salts and micro-organisms. They also help to regulate the concrete’s water content and to extend the service life. Unexpected repairs arising from structural damage are avoided.

Benefits:

  • Barrier against dissolved salts (e.g. road salt and sea water)
  • No corrosion – the steel reinforcement is protected against moisture and does not rust
  • No frost damage – greater resistance to freeze-thaw cycles
  • Retention of high water-vapor permeability
  • Good penetration
  • No surface gloss, tackiness or yellowing
  • Satisfactory alkali stability
  • High UV resistance
  • Reduction in efflorescence

Protection with SILRES® BS saves on costs, energy and resources:

  • No expensive or resource-intensive remediation
  • Much longer service life and thus less environmental pollution
  • Good adhesion for paints
  • Exemplary environmental compatibility

Application:

Surface treatment of:

  • Bridges
  • Roads
  • Tunnels

ETONIS® 7000 A
The ETONIS® 7000 A class is designed for infrastructure coatings, such as drainage concrete which is exposed to substantial mechanical stress. Drainage concrete modified with ETONIS® 7000 A is notable for its excellent resistance to frost and road salts and offers reliable protection against aquaplaning, flooding and noise.

Benefits:

  • Significantly higher flexural, compressive and tensile strength
  • High resistance to freezing and road salt
  • Greatly reduced susceptibility to cracking
  • Longer service life

Application:

Road surfacing

Polymeric modifiers of the ETONIS® product family 9000 M open up new perspectives in concrete design and construction. For example, facade elements can be reinforced with glass mat, polymer fibers or carbon fibers. ETONIS® concrete admixtures enhance the bond between the concrete and the fibers. Studies on polypropylene fibers have shown that adding ETONIS® 9000 M can increase the tensile strength of the composite material by up to 25%.

Self-filling concrete compound (SFCC) is also possible. This is achieved by stirring water into the ETONIS® modified dry-mix mortar and pouring it over the existing stone – an exceptionally strong concrete composite forms very quickly.

One especially promising approach is concrete modification for 3D printing. ETONIS® works here by optimizing the various properties needed for additive manufacturing, such as thixotropy and setting time as well as the mechanical properties of the finished product.

Benefits in fresh concrete:

  • Excellent adhesion to smooth metal and wet surfaces
  • Deformation and flow properties (rheology) can be controlled effectively and individually.

Benefits in hardened concrete:

  • Low modulus of elasticity contributes considerable ductility and flexural strength.
  • Improved mechanical properties

Applications:

  • Composite parts
  • Textile- and fiber-reinforced concrete
  • Self-filling concrete compound (SFCC)
  • Concrete for 3D printing
