WACKER Donates Chemicals for the Production of Disinfectants for Bavarian Hospitals and Care Facilities

Munich, Mar 23, 2020

On receiving an inquiry from the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Munich-based chemical group WACKER this weekend made the unbureaucratic gesture of donating chemicals for the production of 15,000 liters of hand sanitizer for the production of disinfectants to Bavarian hospitals and care facilities. The disinfecting solution was delivered to one of the ministry's distribution centers.

The alcohol needed to produce the disinfectant – a total of 11,000 liters of 2-propanol – was transported yesterday and early this morning in special-purpose vehicles from WACKER’s production site in Nünchritz,Saxony, to the Gendorf chemical industry park in Bavaria. At Gendorf, the solution was mixed into ready-to-use disinfectant. The disinfecting solution is being taken from an official Bavarian government distribution center to hospitals and care facilities in the affected regions.

Dr. Christian Hartel, personnel director and Executive Board member, made it clear that providing rapid and unbureaucratic aid was a natural thing for WACKER to do. “We also reported our stocks of ethanol and 2-propanol to the German Chemical Industry Association, which in turn notified the federal authorities, in order to mitigate disinfectant bottlenecks in a coordinated nation-wide measure,” explained Hartel who is also Chairman of the Board of the Bavarian Chemical Associations. He went on to emphasize that it was important during these difficult times for everyone to close ranks. “The donation represents our contribution toward improving supplies to hospitals and care facilities throughout Bavaria over the long term by providing desperately needed disinfectant.”

Dr. Bernhard Langhammer, Managing Director of InfraServ Gendorf: “The provision of rapid aid in the form of supplying 2-propanol at short notice and the production of urgently needed disinfectants were absolutely in keeping with the successful approach to solidarity adopted in the past by the ChemDelta Bavaria association of companies. In the current crisis, everyone involved worked as a team for the well-being of nursing staff, carers and the general public, not to mention in the interest of protecting their health.”

Key supply goods, especially mineral-oil-based products for mobility and heat, as well as basic products for pharmacy, medicine and medical technology, not to mention everyday articles, continue to be manufactured in ChemDelta Bavaria, in spite of the current challenges. In this regard, the well-established integrated structures run by the region's chemical companies play a vital role.

The production of fuels for transport vehicles by OMV located in the ChemDelta region are determined to some degree by the procure-ment of ethylene by WACKER and the Gendorf chemical park. The ChemDelta Bavaria companies based in southeast Bavaria also make a contribution to supply security and a functioning infrastructure in the form of their combined-cycle gas turbine power stations and by handling and treating wastewater from the surrounding towns and communities.
