MDM-West 2017 WACKER Showcases Self Adhesive Liquid Silicone Rubber with a Low-Friction Surface

Adrian, MI, Jan 31, 2017

At this year’s MDM-West and as previously introduced at COMPAMED medical-technology trade fair this past November in Dusseldorf, WACKER, the Munich-based chemical group, is showcasing a new self-adhesive liquid silicone rubber (LSR) that has a low coefficient of friction. SILPURAN® 6760/50 cures to form an elastomer with a low-friction surface; a property which enables self-adhesive LSR’s to be used in novel applications. The silicone adheres readily to selected polyesters such as polybutylene terephthalate (PBT). SILPURAN® 6760/50 is designed especially for injection molding, making hard/soft components for medical and pharmaceutical applications suitable for cost-effective large-scale production. MDM-West takes place in Anaheim, California, USA from November 14 to 17.

Self-adhesive SILPURAN® 6760/50 liquid silicone rubber was specifically developed for medical-technology and pharmaceutical applications. After curing, it has good mechanical properties and a low-friction surface.

SILPURAN® 6760/50 is an addition-curing silicone rubber. It has two components and, once mixed, cures to form a transparent, mechanically robust elastomer with a 50 Shore A hardness. After post curing, the vulcanizate has a coefficient of friction which is between 50 and 70 percent lower than that of standard LSR’s of comparable hardness. This makes it possible to use liquid silicone rubber in movable-seal applications. The low coefficient of friction also aids fitting of silicone components into medical devices.

SILPURAN® 6760/50 was specifically designed for the production of parts comprising hard/soft combinations such as those used in the pharmaceutical and medical sectors. They are often made from a hard thermoplastic, which determines the shape, encased in a soft plastic layer. SILPURAN® 6760/50 can be used to cost-effectively injection mold these types of components in large scale production runs.

As a self-adhesive grade, SILPURAN® 6760/50 does not need any adhesion promoter. It adheres readily to selected polyesters, such as polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), a thermoplastic often used in injection molding.

SILPURAN® 6760/50 is a self-adhesive liquid silicone rubber (LSR) which has a low-friction surface after curing. Tests show that the product’s coefficient of friction is 50 to 70 percent lower than that of standard LSR’s with a comparable hardness. WACKER premiered this new product at 2016 COMPAMED and is showcasing it this year at the 2017 MDM-West trade show.

SILPURAN® 6760/50 meets selected test requirements of ISO 10993 and United States Pharmacopeia (USP) Class VI. Postured parts are suitable for food-contact applications and can be used under the recommendations of the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The manufacturing process for all SILPURAN® silicone products involves ultrafine filtration, visual inspection and cleanroom packaging in antistatic materials. This ensures that SILPURAN® meets the special purity requirements of the food and medical-technology sectors.
