A solar-powered water kiosk
Access to clean drinking water without having to scoop muddy water from a hole in the ground – for many people, this is a given, but unfortunately, this is not the case in Togo. A WACKER Relief Fund solar project has ushered in a new era there:
Emergency aid from the WACKER Relief Fund
An energy-efficient water kiosk dispenses clean drinking water for the school children of Adjegan and their families, while a second water kiosk in Kpessi treats drinking water using a clean, energy-efficient process.
Many households in the region do not have running water. And those that do can’t drink it because it’s contaminated and can cause disease. Residents have to boil their water as a result, often by burning wood. The resulting emissions can one day be eliminated using water kiosks like these – financed by the WACKER Relief Fund.
The system includes chip cards that can be used to draw clean, purified drinking water, which is pumped and distributed via electric pumps connected to a water purification system. Both the pumps and the water purification system are powered by solar cells made with polysilicon from WACKER.
