From Water-Based to Fire-Retardant with SILRES® M 51 E
SILRES® M 51 E, our innovative binder, was specifically developed with the aim of using water-based paints in the production of heat-resistant coatings. It thus presents an ideal foundation for formulating products with a low VOC (volatile organic compound) content.
Ask our expertsReduction of VOC Emissions Stipulated by Law
The pressure on manufacturers of paints and coatings to reduce the use of solvents continues to grow. In particular, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are subject to more stringent regulations. As a result, there is a greater focus on alternatives involving water-based paints that have a lower impact on the environment. To continue using aqueous paints and coatings, even for high-temperature applications in the future, our researchers have come up with SILRES® M 51 E, a binder specifically developed for these demands.
SILRES® M 51 E, our methyl silicone resin binder, presents entirely new options for paint manufacturers. Not only can this innovative emulsion, which was reformulated from scratch in our laboratories, be easily implemented using familiar methods, it is also ideally suited as the sole binder for producing heat-stable, water-based coatings. In terms of positive features and performance, SILRES® M 51 E thus displays very similar properties as conventional solvent-based silicone resins.
Transforming Water-Based Paints into Heat-Stable Coatings
Cross-cut tests reveal that the adhesive properties of SILRES® M 51 E are similar to those of heat-resistant paints and coatings formulated with solvent-based silicone resin binders.
Thanks to this, it is now possible to harness all the positive effects of water-based paints in heat-resistant industrial applications. The paints dry quickly at room temperature and are tack-free in a matter of minutes. SILRES® M 51 E cures within 30 minutes at 220 to 260 degrees Celsius.
Extensive series of tests have shown that, following baking, sample black paint formulations can withstand temperatures of up to 600 degrees Celsius. These formulations also display excellent adhesion to metallic surfaces such as steel or aluminum and, despite thermal stress, retain their color and lose very little of their gloss.
No Fumes Are a Good Sign
One of the advantages of SILRES® M 51 E, our novel methyl silicone resin binder, is particularly evident in a direct comparison with other aqueous silicone binders: a reduction in the formation of fumes during curing.
A Quick Look at the Main Benefits of SILRES® M 51 E
Coatings based on our methyl silicone resin binder offer many advantages:
- Heat-resistant up to 600 °C (when pigmented)
- Tack-free after 15 to 20 minutes at room temperature
- High degree of hardness
- Excellent scratch and chemical resistance
- Very good color and gloss retention
- Suitable for low-VOC formulations
- Reduced formation of fumes when first heated (after cross-linking)
Water-Based Paints for Heat-Resistant Applications
Heat-resistant coatings play a vital role in automotive and process engineering, as well as in household applications. Thanks to SILRES® M 51 E, water-based coatings can also be used in all these areas of application.
