SILPURAN® and ELASTOSIL® silicone elastomers have a special property profile that makesthem ideal for medical applications. Three of the many reasons for using this pure material are that it can be sterilized and that it offers both excellent chemical and physical resistance without the need for additional stabilizers.
Both SILPURAN® and ELASTOSIL® silicone elastomers from WACKER are the perfect solution for meeting demands in the most diverse, complex and highly sensitive applications in medical technology.
Extrudable SILPURAN® solid silicone rubber finds application in all kinds of pharmaceutical and medical tubes, e.g.
- Drainage, peristalsis and breathing tubes
- Feeding tubes
- Tubes for transferring liquids
SILPURAN® ELASTOSIL® liquid and solid silicone rubbers are converted by injection or compression molding into:
- Filters and membranes
- Respiratory masks
- Respirator bellows
- Instrument grips
- Mats for sterilization trays
Schematic diagram of an extruder with crosshead die
This is a continuous manufacturing process in which silicone rubber is forced through a die to shape it, and is then cured. The necessary pressure is produced by a screw, which homogenizes, compresses and vents the material. Medical and pharmaceutical tubing is made in this way, for example. SILPURAN® solid silicone rubber comes in blocks wrapped in antistatic foil and sealed inside a bag. The customer can thus be sure that the material is not contaminated before it reaches the cleanroom.
Injection molding is currently the most popular and efficient method of producing large quantities of silicones in consistently high quality. Liquid and solid grades of SILPURAN®/ELASTOSIL® silicone rubber can each be used in the production of seals, membranes and valves – the process is fully automatic. SILPURAN® and ELASTOSIL® liquid silicone rubber grades are supplied as a two-part system (A/B) in 20 kg pails and 200 kg drums.
