At our site in Jena, we collaborate with a variety of companies and organizations. We are also proud of the solutions we develop here, which play a critical role in treating severe disease. Commercial products manufactured at our Jena site include asparaginase, which is sold under the brand name Spectrila® and used for treating lymphocytic leukemia in children and teens.
The university city of Jena is one of Germany’s key life science hubs. Jena is the flagship site for Wacker Biotech, with a specialty in manufacturing products such as recombinant proteins based on microbial systems. Before WACKER’s acquisition of the site in 2005, it was home since 1999 to a biotechnology startup called ProThera GmbH spun out from the Hans Knöll Institute (today's Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology). ProThera specialized in the development and manufacture of recombinant therapeutic proteins using microbial expression systems.
Today, technologies offered in Jena include the expression of target proteins in soluble form using our proprietary ESETEC® platform and a protein refolding (FOLDTEC®) method for manufacturing proteins that cannot be produced in their active form in bacterial cells. The Jena site also offers sophisticated cell banking services.
