In the leading life sciences hub of Halle (Saale), Germany, Wacker Biotech develops and produces biologics for international pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. These include recombinant proteins and, since 2024, nucleic acids at a state-of-the-art new RNA competence center next to our original facility. Production is based on stable, highly efficient processes and technologies to ensure high-quality yet cost-effective work. Before 2014 when the site was acquired by WACKER, it belonged to Scil Proteins GmbH, a leading producer of recombinant proteins based on microbial systems that was founded in 1999 as a spin-out from Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg. Many Scil Proteins employees still work at the site today, providing continuity and long-standing experience and expertise. Situated in the Weinberg Campus Technology Park, Wacker Biotech is an active member of the Saxony-Anhalt Life Science Cluster and the SaxoCell life science cluster in the neighboring state of Saxony.
Services offered from Halle include the expression of target proteins in soluble form (ESETEC®) and a protein refolding (FOLDTEC®) method for manufacturing insoluble proteins that cannot be produced in their active form in bacterial cells. Additionally, the site offers the fermentation-generated production of pDNA based on our proprietary PLASMITEC® platform. pDNA is an important starting material for advanced therapies such as those based on viral vectors and mRNA. And with the opening of the new RNA competence center in 2024, the site is WACKER’s center of excellence for RNA manufacturing and LNP formulation, providing active nucleic acid drug substance for innovative therapies and vaccines. Our expertise in this field was honored with the award of a pandemic readiness contract for mRNA vaccines by the German government.
