WACKER Presents Innovative Binders for Construction and Waterproofing Applications

Munich, Apr 04, 2017

WACKER, the Munich-based chemical group, will be at the 2017 European Coatings Show (ECS), presenting its hydrophobic VINNAPAS® 760 ED dispersion as a binder for formulating flexible waterproofing membranes. The new product ensures considerable tensile adhesive strength after long-term exposure to water and outstanding crack-bridging ability even at low temperatures. In addition to this, it has excellent processing properties. These qualities make it ideal for use in waterproofing systems for indoor pools, basements and bathrooms. WACKER will also be showcasing its VERSA® 12 specialty monomer for polymer modification, and its VINNAPAS® EF 7865, VINNAPAS® EP 7860 and VINNAPAS® EAF 7868 dispersions for numerous sealing applications in construction and renovation. The ECS 2017 will be held in Nuremberg, Germany, from April 4 to 6.

Dichtmassen
Sealing compounds based on the new VINNAPAS® EF 7865, VINNAPAS® EP 7860 and VINNAPAS® EAF 7868 dispersions are ideally suited for seals in windows, stairs and doors, for cracks in walls and for sealing HVAC systems.

VINNAPAS® 760 ED is a terpolymer dispersion based on vinyl acetate, ethylene and vinyl ester, and is used as a hydrophobic binder in two-component cementitious waterproofing membranes. Together with ethylene, VERSA® vinyl neodecanoate significantly increases the elasticity of the end product. As a result, the coating is more elastic and very flexible even at low temperatures. Additionally, it is highly resistant to hydrostatic pressure.

As a mortar additive, VINNAPAS® 760 ED ensures outstanding crack bridging, both for static and dynamic cracks – even at exceptionally low temperatures down to -20 °C. Sealing systems based on VINNAPAS® 760 ED thus achieve crack-bridging class O2 as per EN 14891. Thanks to the new dispersion, the end product bonds reliably and permanently, even on difficult substrates. It is also highly compatible with a variety of commercially available cement grades, with very little impact on the setting behavior of the cement. In addition, its high solids content of almost 60 percent allows the user to tailor the polymer/cement ratio to individual requirements without increasing the viscosity.

According to assessment by the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), the material is suitable for contact with drinking water, because the dispersion does not require any additional solvents, plasticizers or film-forming aids, and is manufactured without the use of alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEOs). VINNAPAS® 760 ED is thus ideal for formulating two-component waterproofing membranes used in applications such as indoor pools, basements and bathrooms, as well as water pipes and sewers.

Polymer Modification: VERSA® 12

WACKER will also be presenting its powerful VERSA® 12 specialty monomer, a vinyl ester based on a linear C12 chain. The vinyl laurate monomer is used for producing vinyl polymers, to which it lends special properties such as hydrophobicity or elasticity. WACKER manufactures VERSA® 12 using a patented method that requires no acetylene as a raw material. Products containing VERSA® 12 do not have to be classified as hazardous materials as defined by the German Ordinance on Hazardous Substances. As a result, VERSA® 12 is suitable for hydrophobizing water-repellent construction materials such as grout mortars.

VINNAPAS® Binders for a Variety of Sealing Applications

WACKER will be showcasing three VINNAPAS® dispersions for numerous sealing applications in construction and renovation. Differences in glass-transition temperature (Tg) allow users to adjust the hardness of the end product as desired. VINNAPAS® EF 7865, for instance, is a VAE dispersion with a Tg of -10 °C, making it a rather soft binder; VINNAPAS® EP 7860 (Tg = 10 °C), by contrast, represents a harder grade. Thanks to its exceptionally low glass-transition temperature (Tg = -35 °C), VINNAPAS® EAF 7868 lends itself particularly well to sealing applications with no additional plasticizer. All three grades exhibit high levels of filler acceptance, good adhesion on a variety of substrates and outstanding processing properties. A particular advantage is that the dispersions allow manufacturers to formulate flame-retardant sealants, which is not possible with alternative systems at all or not to this extent. In addition, the low-odor dispersions can be used to formulate end products that are paintable. This makes them ideal binders in sealing compounds, for example for joints in windows, stairs and doors, for cracks in walls and for sealing heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems.
