ETICS: a model for the real world
At WACKER, we spend a lot of time testing our construction chemicals under real-life conditions. Why? To ensure they truly make a difference – for people and the planet. Our model house project in Dubai is a perfect example: it showcases the benefits of external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS) and highlights their real-life potential, as projects in Saudi Arabia have demonstrated.
The idea of the model house project was simple but powerful: test the real-world performance of our modern construction chemistry by directly comparing it to traditional materials. To this end, WACKER Chemicals Middle East partnered with the Dubai Central Laboratory Department to build two identical model houses in Dubai – same size, same layout, same features.
ETICS makes the difference
But there was one crucial difference. One of the houses used conventional building materials. In the other one, which was also equipped with an ETICS, WACKER construction chemicals were used. Both houses were equipped with air conditioning set to a constant interior temperature of 23 °C and exposed to identical conditions. The objective: to measure the true impact of insulation on energy efficiency, indoor comfort and climate protection.
The results speak for themselves
Our model houses made one thing clear: sustainable construction works – and it benefits our lives today as well as those of future generations. Here are some of the results connected to ETICS:
- Around 59% lower energy demand for cooling
- 59% fewer CO2 emissions, helping meet ambitious climate goals
- Noticeably higher living comfort thanks to consistent indoor temperatures
- Less noise from outside, for quieter, more peaceful homes

ETICS in real-life applications
The results of our model house project make a strong case for the use of ETICS in hot climates. In Saudi Arabia, for example, using the technology is already common practice: existing villas are being retrofitted with ETICS to reduce energy consumption and external noise and to improve living comfort. Thousands of new villas are also being built in Riyadh as part of a major housing initiative supported by the Saudi Ministry of Housing. And every single one of them is equipped with ETICS. In a city where the average annual temperature exceeds 26 °C – and regularly soars well above 35 °C – this means more than just energy savings. It means homes that stay cooler, more comfortable and more livable.
It also means a major environmental win: by significantly reducing the need for cooling, these buildings help lower emissions – supporting Saudi Arabia’s commitment to reach net zero by 2060. A better quality of life today, and a critical step toward a more sustainable tomorrow.
“With ETICS, we are ensuring a better life and a better future for our children and future generations.”
