Silicones
Silicones are truly multi-talented. We encounter them every day – in smartphones, cars, textiles, paints, coatings and medical applications.
Silicones Business Division
The age of silicones began at WACKER nearly 80 years ago. In 1947, we became Europe’s first silicone manufacturer; today we are number two in the global silicones business. The Silicones division offers the company’s broadest range of products.
“Silicones are an advanced material fit for the future. Their unique properties are the key to innovations and technological progress in a great many fields, such as the energy transition, electromobility, medical technology and the digital transformation.”
Silicones – empowering megatrends
Discover innovations that drive digitalization, electromobility and the energy transition – from safe solutions for electric transportation to smart sensors and world firsts in sustainable energy.
Multi-talented silicones for a variety of application areas
Silicones have unique properties and are far more versatile than other synthetic materials. They withstand both heat and cold, serving not only as sealants and insulators, but also as lubricants and release agents. They are flexible, water-repellent, elastic, UV-resistant and extremely durable. Thanks to their unique chemical and physical properties, they feature in many application areas and appear everywhere in daily life – even if we don’t usually notice them!
Products made of silicone – indispensable in everyday life
Sustainability is feasible: facades
First impressions count – and that goes for buildings too. But it is not only the facade that determines whether a building appeals to us aesthetically. In many cases, its appeal hinges on how sustainable it is too. Because facades offer fantastic opportunities to put sustainable construction into effect.
Transdermal drug delivery systems: silicone adhesives for transdermal patches
Our study with more than 20 active ingredients shows that silicone gel adhesives enable targeted drug release – rapid, delayed or constant.
BELNEXT®: beauty redefined
Sustainable, bio-based and biodegradable: BELNEXT® expands WACKER’s cosmetics portfolio with a new brand of cosmetic functional raw materials, produced via fermentation, biosynthesis and green chemistry. By transferring proven technologies to personal care, BELNEXT® redefines beauty with an emphasis on performance, sustainability and scientific excellence.
Power to the People: Silicones for Grid Expansion and Energy Transition
Net zero emissions by 2045: This is the ambitious goal which Germany has set itself. For the energy transition to succeed, a collaborative effort from all parties involved is needed: from the energy providers and grid operators to industry and the consumers. The success of this process depends not only on the grand vision, but also on the finer details. And from this aspect, one group of materials stands out for its remarkable contribution: silicones.
Improving battery safety with silicones
Development of electric vehicles is moving at an astonishing pace, as the energy density of the batteries surges with each successive product generation. This underscores the critical need for a thermal barrier between the battery and the passenger compartment. WACKER silicones can deliver crucial improvements to battery safety and longevity.
Our greatest strength?
The WACKER Service Principle
Do you need our technical expertise to develop new products or production processes? Or our support for product formulation and approval or for working out logistics and packaging solutions?
We offer you so much more than just silicones. We are both your advisor and development partner. We respond to your needs, help you achieve your goals and place a real emphasis on innovation. This means we always have your entire production process in mind and can provide you with tailored support to optimize your business processes.
Leverage our experience for your projects.
Production on three continents
We have manufacturing sites in Europe, the Americas and Asia – all maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety. We also set a high bar when it comes to environmental protection, as evidenced by our highly integrated production system in Nünchritz, Germany, which makes maximum use of byproducts, and by the EPA award for our environmental commitment in Adrian, USA.
And by the way:
A good quarter of our silicon metal is sourced from our production site in Holla, Norway . The advantage of this in-house production? It increases our supply security, making us a lot more independent.
