Products Come and Go, but VINNOL® Resins are Here to Stay

Since the 1950s, VINNOL® surface coating resins have been used in countless products. Some of them, such as magnetic tape coatings for video and audio cassettes, have largely disappeared. Others, such as coatings for smartphone casings, have emerged more recently. One thing that hasn't changed is that customers across the globe choose VINNOL® for quality and reliability.

Below are some examples. Please feel free to discuss your applications and ideas with us.

Decorative Film

Is it more rewarding to, receive a gift or give one? That probably depends. But there's always a tingle of anticipation as you open a present. As binders in that wonderfully shiny, rustling decorative film that makes more of your gift, .VINNOL® surface coating resins have played a part in many of these magic moments over 60 years.

VINNOL® Surface Coating Resins in the Manufacture of Decorative Film

VINNOL® surface coating resins are used to make decorative film in a variety of ways:.

  • Take, complex packaging film, for example. First the film, with its decorative surface, is produced. This film is then bonded to the backing material by hot stamping.
  • Our resins can also be used to make printed packaging film. Plastic film – including metallized varieties – can be coated with a printing ink based on VINNOL® binder, for example. An instance of this kind of coating is gravure printing.

Another impressive feature of VINNOL® is how it promotes the dispersion of a wide range of colored pigments, and adheres well to substrates, especially polar plastic surfaces.

VINNOL® surface coating resin have stood the test of time not only thanks to their technical precision and reliable processing, but also because they are considered harmless when used as intended, which makes them ideal binders for sensitive applications.

Hot Stamping Foils

Knowledge is more than a body of data or the processing of information. It is the product of ideas, intuition, questions and dialog. We have learnt this over 60 years of liaising with our VINNOL® customers. That’s why we offer more than just data sheets. Our experts will be only too pleased to help you with questions about ordering, selecting the right product, and processing. For example, you can ask them about developing and manufacturing hot stamping foils to decorate book covers and other everyday objects.

VINNOL® Surface Coating Resins in the Manufacture of Hot Stamping Foils

In the manufacture of hot stamping foils, VINNOL® surface coating resins are used in two different types of layers:

  • The decorative layer flawlessly transfers the design from the foil to the substrate under heat and pressure. Hydroxy and carboxy-functional VINNOL® grades are used here.
  • They are also used in the adhesive layer, which bonds the decorative layers to the carrier under heat and pressure.

In general, VINNOL® surface coating resins are renowned for their versatility, even in sensitive applications, and for the brilliant colors that can be obtained thanks to their excellent interaction with organic and metallic pigments. That’s why we often encounter VINNOL® surface coating resins in everyday life: ,for example, in intricately designed packaging, high-end holographic foil for trademark protection and in the manufacture of high-quality book covers.

Blister Packs

While not every scientist can experience the pure joy of finding a cure for a disease, it can be almost as fulfilling to improve people's lives. For example, by developing a blister pack with the perfect balance of protection and usability. We are grateful for the opportunity with VINNOL®, to play our part in improving quality of life..

Thanks to their unrivaled barrier properties, aluminum foils are often used as packaging for sensitive drugs or foods. For tack-free bonding, the aluminum or metallized plastic surfaces are frequently coated with heat-sealable lacquer based on VINNOL® binders.

Here, VINNOL® surface coating resins excel for the following properties:

  • Excellent adhesion to the surface to be coated and to the sealing counterpart
  • No known harmful effects as per food regulations
  • Odorless and tasteless
  • High resistance to chemicals (such as fats, oils, water, acids and bases)
  • Blocking resistance

Finishing of Artificial Leather

Do you remember the days when the journey was as important as the destination? When products were meant to last a lifetime and not just a season? We do. Our business activities have always been geared to the long term or, as they say today, sustainable.

In product development as well as in our customer relations. Maybe that’s why VINNOL® is still so successful after 60 years, for example in the finishing of artificial leather for handbags, fashion accessories or automotive interior trims.

VINNOL® Surface Coating Resins in the Finishing of Artificial Leather

VINNOL® surface coating resins are ideal for finishing artificial-leather surfaces – enhancing not only their feel and luster, but also their chemical resistance.

Depending on your individual formulation, you can use VINNOL® resins as binders in coatings for synthetic leather to increase or decrease an article’s luster.

With some types of artificial leather, you can apply a subsequent VINNOL® resin-based coating that effectively reduces the undesirable migration of softeners to the surface of the leather, thus preventing the material from becoming brittle. The surface keeps its soft feel over the long term and the artificial leather withstands mechanical stress. What is more, the leather’s printability and resistance to media such as oils and greases are enhanced,.

Plastic - Casing Coatings

Innovative people find it difficult to sit still. They have to explore the unknown and look beyond the horizon. If this describes you, then you're in luck – you can count on navigation systems, with housings that are often coated with VINNOL® surface coating resins. But what if your goal is new markets? Or a new formulation? Then you need a good partner by your side. Here, you can count on us. We also like to tread new paths and, after 60 years of research, have many a shortcut to show you.

VINNOL® Surface Coating Resins in the Manufacture of Navigation Devices

For coatings on plastic housings, VINNOL® resins adhere extremely well to polar surfaces such as polycarbonate, ABS or other technical thermoplastics. Furthermore, a variety of attractive designs are possible as a result of their outstanding interaction with numerous pigments. To provide plastics with a metallic pigment finish, for example for navigation systems or other electronic devices, carboxyl-functional VINNOL® grades are used on account of their excellent adhesion to metals.

VINNOL® Surface Coating Resins in the Printing of Credit Cards

Modern card systems like credit cards usually consist of several layers of plastic film, which are bonded together using processes such as lamination or high-frequency sealing. For printing on the inner layers, the printing inks’ binder composition must ensure:

  • adhesion to the respective surfaces
  • good dispersion of the colorants such that the bonding processes do not cause discoloration or adversely affect the color

The portfolio of mutually compatible VINNOL® surface coating resins makes it possible to blend non-functional and functional binders in such a way as to enable targeted control of the wetting of pigment surfaces and adhesion to a variety of film surfaces.

Hot Stamping on Leather

In many cultures, bridal shoes are a symbol of good fortune. In Germany, for example, young girls used to collect pennies to pay for their bridal shoes, and so ensure a long and prosperous marriage. While the custom may have fallen out of fashion, there's still mileage in the idea of a lasting relationship. We, at least, believe in cultivating long partnerships with customers, employees and partners. We are all the more delighted that VINNOL® finds use as a binder in glamorous footwear such as bridal shoes, too.

VINNOL® surface coating resins display excellent interaction with pigments on both synthetic and real leather. So, appliques such as shiny decorations can be hot stamped onto leather shoes with the aid of VINNOL® resins.

Pad Printing on Plastic

A golf ball is more than just a small sphere. It is a one-, two- or multi-layer structure of rubber, resin and other materials. Even the little dimples are precision work – they determine the flight range, rotation, spin and rolling properties. At the same time, they pose a design challenge: golf balls are often pad printed. Here, VINNOL® surface coating resins can help disperse the pigment in the printing ink and ensure optimum adhesion to the plastic surface. For the perfect ball – and the perfect drive.

VINNOL® binders can be used in the pad printing of golf balls. VINNOL® E grades produced by emulsion polymerization are particularly well suited to this task. They stand out thanks to their excellent pigment wetting and short dispersing times – two factors that positively influence the formulation of printing ink. Special VINNOL® grades can also enhance the adhesion of the printing ink to the plastic surface of the balls.

Protective Aluminium Films

For thousands of years, alchemists searched for the philosopher’s stone, that would transmute base metals into gold. They discovered ether, ammonia and porcelain, for example – but not the secret of making gold. Today, at least, it is possible to manufacture deceptively realistic gold foils – by applying yellow-tinted, transparent coatings to aluminum foil. The secret? VINNOL® resins. They facilitate homogeneous dispersion of the yellow pigments and good adhesion to the metal substrate.
