Which Colors Go with Which Megatrends?
Colors set and follow trends – and it’s not just about design. Megatrends, such as convenience and sustainability, also determine how wall paints are formulated and produced.
Color as a Formula
White is still the number one choice worldwide when it comes to indoor wall paints. However, most manufacturers of indoor paints additionally produce a new collection of trend colors annually. To do this, they not only require competence in terms of design, but also knowledge of the formulation, as not all colors that we see on our screen can be physically put onto a wall. Suitable pigments must exist in reality and must be combined with the correct binders.
In 1960 the artist Yves Klein patented a mixture of the pigment ultramarine and the binder polyvinyl acetate – a combination that still today inspires with its vibrancy. VINNAPAS® vinyl acetate-ethylene (VAE) dispersions offer optimized pigment-binding ability for fully showcasing colors.
Concentrating on the Essentials
A good indoor climate is essential for our well-being. The paints and construction industries have therefore spent decades working to reduce the use of solvents, plasticizers and other volatile organic components in their products. Today, indoor paints can be formulated with a VOC content of less than 1 g/L for healthy interiors. VINNAPAS® VAE dispersions play a key role in this development: they do not need organic solvents, plasticizers or coalescing agents and make it possible to formulate paints without the use of APEO. Product quality and performance remain unaffected, as the polymer acts as a property enhancer. An extra benefit of this development is that eliminating VOCs also eliminates the typical smell of fresh paint. VINNAPAS®, in other words, allows completely odorless paints to be manufactured for all of our senses, except the sense of smell.

Extras with Added Value
Water-based paints can be formulated with a low VOC content – and without any inherent odor – with VINNAPAS® VAE dispersions. But what if pleasant smells are desired? Aromatherapy has understood the effects of essential oils for a long time. CAVAMAX® cyclodextrins allow natural substances to be mixed into the wall paint. The fragrant substances are released subtly when the dried paint comes into contact with water or humidity. Here is a good example with a side benefit: CAVAMAX® geraniol may smell nice to humans, but it keeps insects, such as midges and flies, away.
New Ways to More Sustainability
VINNAPAS® VAE dispersions not only allow the amount of volatile organic components to be reduced significantly, they are also produced without the use of alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEO). Furthermore, with VINNAPAS® eco, product grades are available for which – in accordance with the mass balance approach – herein, fossil raw materials are replaced with certified renewable raw materials in the supply chain. These VINNAPAS® eco grades are certified to the REDcert2 standard and audited by TÜV NORD, an independent test organization.
With NEXIVA® we also offer polymer binders for latex paints in powder form. As these paints are only mixed with water before use, there is no need to use preservatives or antifreeze fluid. And this is just one of the aspects that make this paint so sustainable.
Effortless Perfection
Convenience is one of the bigger megatrends of our time. This is also true for interior wall paint: it should be easy to apply, preferably work without a primer and cover with just one coat. It should then retain its color when dried, be easy to maintain and ideally be wipeable. VINNAPAS® VAE dispersions allow the formulation of low-VOC interior paints with very high abrasion resistance, outstanding hiding power and good color intensity.
Go Glocal!
Successful business is done in person, which is why we have set up sales offices and technical centers across the globe. Our experts understand the specific needs and challenges of local markets. This goes as far as us having developed special binders for the requirements of specific regions.
VINNAPAS® EP 3360 for Europe, the Middle East and Africa
Ideally suited to decorative paints with a very low VOC content (< 1 g/L) and possesses excellent formulation characteristics with regionally available raw materials. VINNAPAS® EP 3360 offers outstanding hiding power, lowering formulation costs. Furthermore, less coats may have to be applied with conventional coating systems.
VINNAPAS® EP 3360 for China
Ideally suited to decorative paints with a very low VOC content (< 1 g/L) and possesses excellent formulation characteristics with regionally available raw materials. VINNAPAS® EP 3360 offers outstanding hiding power, lowering formulation costs. Furthermore, less coats may have to be applied with conventional coating systems.
VINNAPAS® EF 8300 for North America
Developed especially for the North American market as acrylate alternatives for the formulation of high-quality paints. Performance is comparable to that of pure acrylic paints and is better than that of conventional styrene acrylates and mixtures. As acrylate-free alternatives to conventional binders in high-quality coatings, they meet the requirements of current VOC standards, such as the Green Seal GS-11.
VINNAPAS® EF 8001 for South America
A fluid vinyl acetate-ethylene (VAE) dispersion. The binder is suitable for a multitude of architectural paints and offers numerous benefits, such as a low VOC content, very good durability and outstanding scratch and abrasion resistance. Additionally, no APEO or formaldehyde is used during the production of VINNAPAS® EF 8001, reducing its odor profile significantly.
VINNAPAS® EF 818 for South East Asia and the Pacific
A binder for matte and semi-matte interior paints below the critical pigment-volume concentration (CPVC), this product is extremely low-odor and combines a low VOC rating with outstanding performance data and cost benefits. In terms of abrasion resistance and touch-up properties, VINNAPAS® EF 818 exceeds all other technologies, such as low-VOC styrene acrylates, and also offers more flexibility during formulation.
VINNAPAS® EF 8001 for Latin America
A fluid vinyl acetate-ethylene (VAE) dispersion. The binder is suitable for a multitude of architectural paints and offers numerous benefits, such as a low VOC content, very good durability and outstanding scratch and abrasion resistance. Additionally, no APEO or formaldehyde is used during the production of VINNAPAS® EF 8001, reducing its odor profile significantly.
