REACH: WACKER Registers 245 Substances with the European Chemicals Agency

Munich, Jul 03, 2018

Wacker Chemie AG registered a total of 245 substances with the European Chemicals Agency in Helsinki by the end of May, the expiry date for the third and last registration phase of the EU’s REACH chemicals program.

REACH is a European Union regulation about the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals. By the end of May 2018, manufacturers and importers had to submit a dossier to ECHA (the European Chemicals Agency in Helsinki) on the manufacture, use and safety of each substance produced in volumes of 1 to 100 tonnes per year.

The substances – called “phase-in” substances (most are well established in the market) – had to be registered in three phases between 2010 and 2018. Starting 2006, WACKER worked intensively on preparing and implementing REACH. To this end, Corporate Product Safety set up a REACH team of experts. They came from Product Safety (toxicologists and registrants), from Raw Material Procurement and from the business divisions.

REACH Schedule

Cooperating closely, WACKER’s experts prepared chemical safety assessments (CSAs) for 200 substances. They then summarized the results in chemical safety reports (CSRs). Now they are working on ECHA requests for additional Information – for example about evaluation, the process (the “e” in REACH) whereby ECHA examines priority substances.

WACKER’s REACH experts registered substances not only for Wacker Chemie AG, but also for subsidiaries outside of the European Union – 22 dossiers for Wacker Chemical Corporation (USA), 6 for WACKER Greater China, 3 for WACKER Norway and 1 for Wacker Metroark Chemicals (India).
