It also supplies the WACKER Experiments Kit. Aside from involvement in school activities, we maintain close contact with institutes of tertiary learning and with researchers at universities around the globe. We support students with their undergraduate theses, offer internships and jobs to student employees, award finance grants to the German Institute of Science and Technology in Singapore and promote the chemistry competition run by the Tsinghua University in Beijing. Example: Learning by Doing - School Experiments with WACKER Silicones
A more recent innovation than their carbon-based counterparts, silicones and their precursors, the organosilanes, have an impressive record. Nonetheless, silicones have still not made it onto school curricula, where the undoubtedly important carbon chemistry dominates. To familiarize teachers and pupils with the huge applications potential of organosilicon compounds, WACKER has produced a practical teaching aid geared to the didactic requirements of educational establishments that is designed to be more or less self-contained. Aside from the necessary starting materials and equipment, the kit comes with a brochure containing all the instructions for the experiments and further useful background information. Experiments on products such as silicone fluids, silicone foam-control agents, silicones for construction chemicals, mold-making compounds, sealants and adhesives all go under the motto “Learning by Doing".
To supplement the experiments kit, the Didactic Silicones Documentation (DiSiDo) was developed in collaboration with the didactic department of the University of Wuppertal. This interactive CD-ROM contains all the background information concerning the production, structure, properties and uses of silicones. One chapter is dedicated to experimental instructions, while another chapter contains further information, slideshow presentations, animations and video files. The contents of the kit and the CD-ROM are currently being updated for a further new edition.
