Silicones are utterly dependable and safe to use. In the event of fire, they evolve minor quantities of smoke but no toxic gases. This renders them ideal for safety-critical applications, such as elastomer parts for aircraft, railcars and ships.
Silicone burns to form water vapor and carbon dioxide – not halogens or toxins. Specialty ELASTOSIL® grades additionally contain a flame-retardant and so are difficult to set on fire (e.g. UL 94 V-0 compliant).
