Wacker-Belsil®volatile silicones and dimethicones are widely used as carriers or diluents for antiperspirants and deodorants. They enhance spreading and lubricating properties, evaporate quickly from the skin without cooling or stinging it, and leave it feeling pleasantly dry and smooth. They lubricate spray valves and roll-on applicators, ensure stick compositions spread smoothly, and prevent soaping and whitening during application.
Phenyl silicones are used to adjust the refractive index of antiperspirants to allow transparent products to be made. Phenyl products also reduce stickiness in recipes containing acrylic acid polymers. Oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions benefit from the use of alkoxy silicones, which render the skin pleasantly soft to the touch. Alkyl silicones and HDK®pyrogenic silicas provide rheology modification for enhanced application properties. Alkyl silicones imbue antiperspirants with uniform consistency, render the thixotropic properties stable to temperature changes and act as suspension agents for AP salts.
