Airbags are standard accessories in many modern vehicles. They owe their dependability in no small measure to a silicone coating. This coating keeps the airbags flexible and resistant to temperature fluctuations, aging and abrasion. It enhances their tear strength, releases substances with a very low order of toxicity when it burns, guarantees long service lives and can be readily pigmented during production. Silicone-coated airbags offer superior, more uniform deployment and retain their elasticity even under the severest temperature conditions, from -50 °C to 180 °C. WACKER has developed innovative liquid silicone rubber grades for new types of airbags, such as curtain airbags. These silicone rubbers keep the airbags inflated for an extended period if the vehicle overturns and also contribute to straightforward production.
