The winners of Bavaria’s 10 regional competitions (Augsburg, Ingolstadt, Mittelfranken/Erlangen, Munich-East, Munich-North, Neumarkt, Oberfranken, Passau, Schongau and Unterfranken) presented their ideas and projects under the sponsorship of Munich-based Wacker Chemie AG.
89 budding scientists – 15 women and 74 men – fielded the jury’s critical questions. The 30 jurors picked the Bavarian winners from seven disciplines (biology, chemistry, earth and space sciences, mathematics/computer science, physics, engineering, and the workplace).
Five women and 14 men received awards. They will present their 11 winning projects at the national final in Bremerhaven from May 22 to 25, 2008.
Beforehand, the winners will be congratulated by Bavarian Minister President Dr. Günther Beckstein in a ceremony at Munich’s Prinz-Carl-Palais on April 9, 2008.
At the Deutsches Museum today, 300 guests carefully followed the proceedings as Bernd Sibler, (Bavaria’s Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Education) and Dr. Fridolin Stary (Wacker Chemie AG’s head of Corporate R&D) presented the awards.
The winners received numerous cash prizes and exciting research internships at renowned institutes.
As part of a year-long project, four Wacker Chemie trainees organized the prize-giving ceremony and accompanying events.
WACKER traditionally prioritizes research. In sponsoring the state-wide Young Scientists competition, the company fosters new talent in the natural sciences and inspires interest in research.
